Via Wired: Explanation of What Net Neutrality Vote Means

Via Wired: Explanation of What Net Neutrality Vote Means
On 12-14-17 the FCC (in the USA) voted to end Net Neutrality rules that were put in place in 2015. One of the interesting parts of the vote, is that the person that was put in charge of the FCC was the lead attorney for Verizon, in a previous life (not that his previous life would ever influence the current one – INSERT SARCASM HERE).  Since the vote, I’ve had many people asking “What is Net Neutrality” and “How does it affect me”?

Well one of the best explanations I have seen about both what is Net Neutrality and what you can do at this point comes from the Editor in Chief of Wired Magazine Nicholas Thompson. In the following video from the Wired Facebook page, Mr. Thompson explains, with some easy to understand examples, what this really means to you.

Wired also has addition information on Net Neutrality on their site.

How To Use Facebook Safety Check To Tell People Your OK

0

From hurricanes, to earthquakes, to terror attacks, and numerous other disasters, being able to communicate to your friends and family that you’re ok is something everyone should have a plan for. With the popularity of Facebook, that is one way to get the word out and Facebook has made that easier with the Facebook Safety Check.

Facebook automatically activates Safety Check if multiple people in an affected area post about an incident. If Facebook knows you’re in an affected area, they will show you a notification that lets you click and tell people “I’m Safe”. As soon as you click “I’m safe, Facebook will automatically create a post on your wall telling your friends and family that you are safe.

If Facebook doesn’t register you in an area, you can always go to the Facebook Safety Check area yourself.  On the main page you will see a list of any friends or family who have checked in from a posted event. You will also see a list of events around the world. You can click on any of the listed events.

Once you select an event, you will see a prompt asking you if you are in the affected area. If you click yes, you will then trigger the prompt where you can select “I’m Safe”.  In addition, if you have friends or family that are listed as being in that area, you can “ask if safe”.

With the fact that Facebook is known globally, and has over 1 billion monthly global users, this seems to just make sense as a way to easily notify friends and family after an event.

How To: Extend Device Battery Life

0

Especially in these times, with all the emergencies and natural disasters that are currently happening, there may be a time when you just need to keep your device running “just a little longer”. How do you keep your device running, be it a cell phone, tablet, or laptop, when you just can’t plug it in? Here are something you can do to keep your devices running……

How To Save Your Battery

  • All modern devices have some form of a “power save” mode. The power save mode will darken the screen, and turn off non-essential features, and in some cases, it may even make your screen show in black and white.

*For laptops – (Windows 10) In settings look in settings -> system settings ->  Display to lower the brightness. In addition look in settings -> system settings -> power and sleep to set how quickly after inactivity the screen and/or the device itself will turn off (sleep).
*For laptops – (MacBook) In system preference look for Energy Saver where you can set how quickly the computer and display go to sleep.

*For iOS – In settings look for Battery, then under battery turn on Low Power Mode. Keep in mind that low power mode will turn off mail fetch (which means you won’t get email automatically), background app refresh, and animation.

*For Android – Depending on the manufacturer the setting name may be different. In settings look for any of the following Low Battery Mode, Ultra Power Saving Mode (Samsung), EXTREME Power Saving Mode (HTC), or STAMINA mode (Sony).

  • Another thing you can do is turn off push notifications. That means that your apps won’t automatically scan for new text messages, emails, or social media posts. Every time the apps go out to see if you have a new message you are using your battery. Depending on your device, check in the settings area to disable push notifications.
  •  How bright is your screen? The brighter your screen is, the more you are using the battery. On a pc, you can dim your screen in the settings (Windows) or system preferences section (Mac). On the iPhone swipe up from the bottom of the screen or on Android swipe down from the top of the screen to see the screen brightness setting.
  •  Lastly, you can turn off some or all of the features of your device. If you have GPS, NFC, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi on you are using up more of your battery. So turning off as many of those features as possible will save your battery.  If you really want to save your battery, put your device in airplane mode (which means it will not send/receive messages or calls). All you would need to do is take it off airplane mode as needed.

Solar Eclipse Aug 21st – How To Photograph With Smartphone

0

I’m sure over the last couple of weeks (or months) you have heard about the upcoming solar eclipse on Monday, if you happen to live in an area that will get to see it. For starters, DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN while trying to look at the solar eclipse.  You need to have special glasses that are (and this is very important) verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.

If you are still trying to get the special eclipse glasses, here are some retailers that are selling ISO compliant glasses.

  • 7-Eleven
  • Best Buy
  • Hobby Town
  • Kirklands
  • Kroger
  • Love’s Travel Stops
  • Lowe’s
  • Pilot/Flying J
  • Toys “R” Us
  • Walmart

So what if you want to record this event on your cell phone, so you can post all over social media what you saw. Well for starters you DO NOT want to just point your phone at the sun and look at the sun that way. You will most likely damage both your phone and your eyes if you do. Here is what you should do if you want to record this once in a life time event.

(*If you see a message about “You need Flash To Watch Video”, click where it says Flash Update and then click allow)

For those looking for additional safety tips on viewing the Solar Eclipse, NASA has tips on their website – HERE

Lastly, Just remember, this is a once in a lifetime event for most people. Take time to enjoy it and make sure you follow all of the safety recommendations.
