If you are using Google Gmail, you may have seen a error message appearing on your emails today. It’s not just you, Google is having issues with Gmail. Today’s post will go over the details that we know so far.

Error Being Seen on Gmail 

If you have been on Gmail this morning, you may have seen the following email on each email you receive.

The message reads, “Be careful with this message. Gmail hasn’t scanned this message for spam…….

According the the Google Workspace Status Dashboard, Google is aware of the issue and are investigating the issue.  This message was posted as of 8:38a pacific time.

At this point, Google is acknowledging that “some Gmail users are experiencing misclassification of emails in their inbox and additional spam warnings……

UPDATE: 4:50p PST – According to OpenTable, most services have been restored. SEE UPDATE BELOW 

OpenTable is one of the most commonly used reservations apps today. They have been handling restaurant reservations since 1998.

If you use OpenTable to make reservations, at restaurants, you maybe currently out of luck. It appears that as of approximately 11:15a (pacific time) they have been in an outage situation.

Details are limited so far, but according to the OpenTable Status page, an ISP incident is causing issues with the OpenTable apps (both Android and IOS), as well as the front of house app (on iPad) and the website forms.

The error seen when trying to use OpenTable is “Sorry, an error occured….” as seen below.

According to the latest update from OpenTable, most services have returned to normal.

For those not familiar with The Internet Archive, (archive.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library, to offer permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format.

According to the Internet Archive About page, the site/non-profit was Founded in 1996, has a historical web collection (the Wayback Machine) of over 835 billion web pages, 10.6 million videos (including 2.6 million Television News Programs), over 15 million audio items (including over 255,000 live concerts), over 44 million books and texts, 4.8 million images, 1600 education items, and over 1 million software items.

Archieve.org DDOS Attack

The issue currently facing The Internet Archive site, is the same battle many other sites have had, known as a DDoS or Distributed Denial-of-Service attack. On its blog, Archive.Org announced that in the past few days, an unknown attacker or attackers have sent tens of thousands of fake requests every second. 

As explained by Brewster Kahle, founder and digital librarian of the Internet Archive

 “Thankfully the collections are safe, but we are sorry that the denial-of-service attack has knocked us offline intermittently during these last three days.” “With the support from others and the hard work of staff, we are hardening our defenses to provide more reliable access to our library. What is new is this attack has been sustained, impactful, targeted, adaptive, and importantly, mean.”

Explaining The DDOS Attack


The Distributed Denial-of-Service attack is an overload of a site. Picture the bad guys sending thousands of people to your favorite store. The people sent are not buying anything, they just stand there and take up space. If they put enough people inside your favorite store, you won’t be unable to get in and your store won’t be able to function.

That is the digital goal of the bad guys who run these DDoS attacks. They have a goal to disable or take down a website, web application, cloud service, or other online resource by overwhelming the connection with pointless connection requests. If the site or service they are targeting becomes inoperable or ceases to function, they have succeeded in their goal.

Final Thought

The Internet Archive team has the resources to manage and respond to these kind of issues. That isn’t always the case for small sites.

News: Possible BSOD After Windows Update

Installing Windows Updates is always a recommended function. Microsoft releases updates monthly on “Patch Tuesday” to update, secure, and improve Windows. Sometimes however these updates cause problems, after release. December 2022 patch Tuesday update is one of those times. The Issue Reported After December Windows Update 

There are a number of items updated with the December Patch Tuesday. The issue appears to be specific to KB5021233, that after installing and rebooting triggers a blue screen of death (BSOD) on the computer.

If you notice closely, at the bottom of the BSOD the error code will be 0xc000021a.

According to the Microsoft Technical Note

After installing KB5021233, there might be a mismatch between the file versions of hidparse.sys in c:/windows/system32 and c:/windows/system32/drivers (assuming Windows is installed to your C: drive), which might cause signature validation to fail when cleanup occurs.

The affected versions: Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2

BSOD After Windows Update

Microsoft WinRE Mode  

The following Information has been released by Microsoft. In BOLD will be additional notes/info added by Tech Geek and More, to simplify the information.

Workaround: To mitigate this issue on devices already experiencing it, you will need to use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) with the following steps:

The Windows Recovery Environment should come up when your computer isn’t able to fully boot into Windows. If you are in WinRE then you will be seeing the following screen

  • You will need to enter Windows Recovery Environment. If your device has not automatically started up into WinRE.

To enter WinRE – If you are stuck on the BSOD, hold the power button on your machine, until it powers off, and then keep holding it for a count of 10 (seconds). Once you have powered down, hold down the physical Shift key on the keyboard and turn on your machine.

Keep holding the shift key until you see a message about Entering Windows Recovery Environment. 

Workaround Once In WinRE Mode 

  • Select the Troubleshoot button.
  • Select the “Start recovery, troubleshooting, and diagnostic tools” button.
  • Select the “Advanced Options” button.
  • Select the “Command Prompt” button and wait for your device to restart, if needed.
    • Your device should restart to a Command Prompt window. You might need to sign into your device with your password before getting to the Command Prompt window.
  • TYPE the following command  

xcopy C:\windows\system32\drivers\hidparse.sys C:\windows\system32\hidparse.sys

It should look like the image (above), and then hit enter. That will copy the correct file to fix the issue

**Important: If Windows is not installed to C:\windows you will need to modify what you are typing to the location of your Windows install. For 99.9% of you, Windows is installed on C:\, which is the default location, unless you had a geeky family member do a custom setup for you.

  • Once the previous command completes, type: exit and then hit enter 
  • This should bring you back to the main WinRE Screen. Select the “Continue” button.

  • Windows should now start up as expected.

Important: It is not recommended to follow any other workaround than those recommended above. We do not recommend deleting the hidparse.sys from your Windows\System32 folder.

Final Thought 

This doesn’t affect everyone, so these steps are only if you do actually see the BSOD.  Microsoft is working on an update that will properly fix this for all those affected, but in the meantime, this workaround should keep you running.

What Is Known

According to information, via Cybernews, someone posed an ad to a well-known hacker community saying they were selling a current database of 487 million WhatsApp user mobile numbers. According to the info, the data by country breakdown includes

  • 32 million users from the USA
  • 45 million users from Egypt
  • 35 million users from Italy
  • 11 Million users from the UK

among the user base affected. According to the review by Cybernews, the small sample they received was checked and confirmed to be legit WhatsApp users. Information like the phone numbers associated with WhatsApp accounts can be used for spam, and phishing attempts, and as a starting point for getting more info on individuals.

Meta, who is the parent company of WhatsApp, did not comment on the information, so as of now there is no clear indication as to where the info came from. Possible WhatsApp Data Leak

What Can You Do To Protect Yourself 

Unfortunately, at this time, there is no way to see if you are in the WhatsApp database unless you are willing to pay the seller for the information. However, one step with WhatsApp you should be doing is changing the following profile settings to “Contacts Only”

  • Last Seen and Online
  • Profile Photo
  • About
  • Read Receipts

You want to limit the amount of information you share with the general (global) public. To check/change these settings

  • Click on the down arrow that you will see to the right of your profile picture, then click settings

  • In the settings window, click on Privacy

  • In the Privacy window that opens, make sure that the Last seen and online, Profile Photo, and About are set to My Contacts.

For additional privacy, you can uncheck Read Receipts. By doing so, the check next to each message will not light up (for either you or the person who sent you a message) once you see it.  If you notice when the check next to each message goes dark green that means the person on the other end of the conversation has seen your message.

There are numerous ways that the information that is being sold in the database could have been acquired. The only thing you can really do is try to limit how much info you share with the global audience of the internet. The more you make public, the more chance there is that a bad guy will find information that you don’t want to be shared.

When accessing the Software Update Screen, if you only see iOS/iPadOS 15.7, then most likely your device is not eligible to get v16.  However, look at the bottom of the screen and see if you have the Upgrade to IOS/iPadOS 16.  If you see it at the bottom of the screen, you should be able to select it and update to the latest version.

How To: Outlook for Mac (Legacy)- Change Font Size

Today’s post is for users of Outlook for Mac. Specifically how to change the default font size. This post is for the legacy Mac version of Outlook. We will review the simple steps you can take to make the change and have those changes become the default.

With these changes, you will have the ability to adjust the font size of the

  • Sidebar
  • Mail List
  • Reading Pane
  • New Messages
  • Reply Messages

 

Change The Font Size – Outlook Side Bar / Mail List / Reading Pane

The font size may not look very big in the Outlook app, depending on the size of the screen. For some having larger size text is just a necessity and changing the size of the text in the sidebar (1), mail list (2), and reading pane (3) text is the 1st step

  • Open the Outlook app, and then Go to Outlook > Preferences > Fonts.

  • In the Font window that opens, move the slider to the left (for smaller) and right (for larger).  Once you move it, this will adjust the size of all the fonts seen in the sidebar, mail list, and reading pane.

Change The Font Size – New Mail / Reply Mail / Forward Mail / Plain Text Mail

Making the change above doesn’t change the font size when you create a new email or reply to an email. There is an additional set of steps to make the email messages themselves change the font size.

To change the default font for incoming and outgoing messages:

  • Select Outlook > Preferences > Fonts.
  • In the Default fonts for composing messages section click the Font button next to the composition style you want to edit. For example, click Font next to New mail to select a default font for new messages, or next to Reply or forward to set a font for outgoing messages.

  • In the window that open, On the Font tab, you can choose the default Font type, Font Style, Size, Color & Underline, and Effects

  • If you want to get extra fancy with your emails, On the Advanced tab, you can adjust default character spacing and typography

Just repeat the steps for each type of email message, New Mail, Reply/Forward Mail, and Plain Text Mail. Once you make changes and click ok, those changes will become the default settings for the Outlook app on Mac.
