Apple Buys Shazam And Now Integrates It Into iOS & iPadOS

In 2018, Apple announced that it had bought the music recognition software Shazam (for a reported $400 million). So what do you do if you spend that kind of money on a software product? The answer would be to integrate it into both iOS & iPadOS so that users of those Apple devices can easily use it. Today’s post will go over how to turn on Shazam if you use an iPhone or an iPad.

For starters, you need to be on version 14.2 of iOS or iPadOS to be able to use the integrated Shazam. To check what version you are using, go to Settings -> General -> Software Updates and make sure it says you are on version 14.2.  If you aren’t you will see the missing update, go ahead and update.

About Shazam

A quick background on Shazam for those who may not be familiar with the application. Shazam, one of the world’s most popular and highly-rated music apps, used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The app lets users identify songs simply by listening to the music playing around them. It has been downloaded over 1 billion times around the world, and users identify songs using the Shazam app over 20 million times each day.

To Turn On Shazam On Your iPhone or iPad

The steps to turn on the Shazam integration are simple, just make sure (as noted earlier in this post) you are on version 14.2 on your iPhone or iPad. Once you are on the correct version, do the following

  • Go to Settings, and select Control Center on the left side
  • Now scroll down on the right side to the selection that says More Controls, and look for Music Recognition and select it

  • Once selected, the Music Recognition choice will move up to the Included Controls section. NOTE: If you want to add anything else you see, you can select it now to add it to the Control Center.

For set up, that is it. That’s all you need to do.

To Use Integrated Shazam On Your iPhone or iPad

For usage, it just depends on which device you have. Here is what you need to do for each

On an iPhone with Face ID

  • You just pull down the Control Center shade by swiping down from the top-right of the phone and tapping the Music Recognition icon.

On iPhones with a home button

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access this menu and tap the Music Recognition icon.

On an iPad

  • You just pull down the Control Center shade by swiping down from the top-right of the phone and tapping the Music Recognition icon.

If music is playing when the Music Recognition icon is tapped it will listen to what is playing and give you an answer to what the song is.

Final Thought

For the fact that Apple paid millions for Shazam, they were naturally going to do something with it.  You don’t have to have an account or anything else with Shazam. If you need music recognition, it is waiting for you in the Control Center.
