About The Apple Security Update

There are 3 updates listed on the Apple security updates page. The updates listed are iOS 12.1.4, macOS Mojave 10.14.3 Supplemental Update, and Shortcuts 2.1.3 for iOS.

Apple Mar 2019 Update

iOS 12.1.4

This update will update your iPhone/iPad to the latest version of iOS. Updates include

  • FaceTime – This update addresses the FaceTime bug that would allow someone access to audio/video of someone they called before the other person answered. This is the bug that was all over the news in late January 2019

  • Live Photos – While looking into the FaceTime issue, Apple also discovered an issue with Live Photos. This update addresses that previously undiscovered issue. Per Apple, “we have updated our servers to block the Live Photos feature of FaceTime for older versions of iOS and macOS.”
  • Foundation / IOKit – The other 2 updates are under the hood of iOS. These 2 bugs could lead an application to be able to take more control then it is supposed to have. This is a common way for those who have malicious intent to take over a device.

macOS Mojave 10.14.3 Supplemental Update

For the macOS Mojave update, it includes the same FaceTime and Live Photos update as in the iOS update, plus its own Foundation update to address an issue where an application may be able to gain elevated privileges.

Shortcuts 2.1.3 for iOS

This is a separate update for iOS users. In this update Apple addresses 2 issues, fixing bugs that would allow

  • A local user may be able to view sensitive user information
  • A sandboxed process may be able to circumvent sandbox restrictions

To Make Sure You Have The Update

iOS – To make sure you have the update on your iPad / iPhone, go to settings -> General -> Software updates. Any missing update will be listed on that screen.
