Bring Back IE / Change Default Browser In Windows 10

0
microsoft-logo

Since the release of Windows 10, most of the comments I’ve  heard are positive.  Everyone seems to like Windows 10, or at least like it more than Windows 8, however the BIG complaint that I keep getting over and over involves Internet Explorer being removed, and how the Edge browser doesn’t work for a number of popular websites or in business environments. The reason the Edge browser does not work for some is because the Edge browser does not properly support some of the applications that are used to make websites run (ActiveX controls, Silverlight, or Java). If the site you are trying to use requires one of those functions as part of a web browser, then Edge will not work for you. It is true that not supporting those features makes Edge a much more secure browser, but if you need access you need access. Did I mention that the Edge Browser is set to default so whenever you click on a link in Windows 10 (like in an email) the Edge browser is what opens.

There are a couple of things you should know

  • Internet Explorer has not been removed, the link has just been moved to an area where most people wont think of looking (Windows Accessories).
  • You can make Internet Explorer, or any other browser you download (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) the default browser really easily

The following steps will help you find Internet Explorer and also change the default browser in Windows 10 to whatever you wish to use.

Where is Internet Explorer?

  • The Edge browser looks a lot like Internet Explorer but it has some major differences under the hood. To access Internet Explorer – Look in the start menu, under Windows Accessories. You can right click and pin it to the start menu for easier access.

How To Change The Default Browser In Windows 10

Use the following steps to change what Web Browser opens by default in Windows 10, when you click on links.

  • Next to the start menu –> Click in the Search the web and Windows box –> Type Default Programs –> Click on Default Programs

screen-shot-2016-10-16-at-5-37-17-pm

  • In the Window that opens, you can select the Default Email Client, Maps Program, Music Player, Photo viewer, Video Player, and Web Browser (from programs currently installed on the computer).  In this case, click on the Browser listed under Web Browser

screen-shot-2016-10-16-at-5-44-18-pm

Once you click on the browser, you will get a pop up box listing installed browsers.  Just select the browser you want to use by default.

screen-shot-2016-10-16-at-5-46-41-pm

Once you make your changes, just close the window and that will do it. What you select is what will open by default when you click on links.

Adding 2 Factor Authentication – Amazon

0

This past week Amazon sent an email notifying some of its users that their passwords had been reset.   The company said there’s no reason to believe the Amazon accounts had been hijacked but decided to take this step of resetting passwords “out of an abundance of caution”, after discovering a list of email addresses and passwords that had been published online and suspecting that some of its users’ credentials were on that list, given that certain people use the same passwords for multiple services.  One of the recommendations that Amazon gave its users was to turn on 2 factor authentication for Amazon.

Here’s the complete message that Amazon sent under the subject line “Your Amazon password has been changed”:

Hello,

At Amazon we take your security and privacy very seriously. As part of our routine monitoring, we discovered a list of email addresses and passwords posted online. While the list was not Amazon-related, we know that many customers reuse their passwords on multiple websites. Since we believe your email addresses and passwords were on the list, we have assigned a temporary password to your Amazon.com account out of an abundance of caution.

You will need to reset your password when you return to the Amazon.com site. To reset your password, click “Your Account” at the top of any page on Amazon.com. On the Sign In page, click the “Forgot your password?” link to reach the Amazon.com Password Assistance page. After you enter your email or mobile phone number, you will receive an email containing a personalized link. Click the link from the email and follow the directions provided.

Your new password will be effective immediately. We recommend that you choose a password that you have never used with any website.

You can also enable Amazon’s Two-Step Verification, a feature that adds an extra layer of security to your account. In addition to entering your password, Two-Step Verification requires you to enter a unique security code during sign in. To learn more about Two-Step Verification, go to Amazon.com Help, go to Managing Your Account, and click More in Managing Your Account, and then click More under Account Settings.

Previously, Tech Geek and More had posted about turning on 2 factor authentication for several services (like Facebook, Twitter, iCloud, etc).  The following information is for those who would like to turn on 2 factor authentication on their Amazon Account.

How To Turn On 2 Factor Authentication

  • Log into your Amazon Account. Once logged in, click on Your Account, that is just under your name (on the top right), and then click on Your Account (again) from the drop menu.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-40-29-am

  • In the next window, under Need Support (toward the top right), click on Change Email or Password

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-26-28-am

  • At this point, click Edit (toward the bottom) to the right of Advanced Security Settings.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-28-52-am

  • You will now be in the Advanced Security Settings page. On this page, click on Get Started button

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-06-45-pmText Message (SMS) Steps

  • You will now have a decision to make. You can either select to receive your authentication code via a text message or you can select using an Authenticator App. The following steps will be for those who want to use text message (Authenticator App Steps scroll down).  If that’s the case all you will need to do is enter your phone number, and click send code.  Once you receive the text code, enter it into the box (at the bottom) and select Verify code and continue.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-11-37-pm

  • You will now set up a backup method. This is in case you can’t access your initial text message number.  In this 2nd step, you should either set up a different phone number to receive text messages or a number you can receive calls from. NOTE: This CAN’T be the same number you used in step 1.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-31-47-pm

  • Lastly in this step, Amazon informs you that on some devices (usually older tablets, you may run into an issue with 2 step authentication because the device wont be able to show the second screen that prompts for the security code.  If you run into that issue, just log in by adding the security code that is sent to you to the end of the password. In this step, you also have an option of NOT using 2 factor authentication on devices you use often.  If you want to limit not having to use 2 factor authentication on some devices, check the box on the bottom of the page.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-39-31-pm

This completes the Amazon 2 factor authentication using text messages.

Authenticator App Steps

For those who don’t want to bother with receiving a text message, you can use what is known as an Authenticator App.  The advantage with the Authenticator App is that any device that you have the app installed and logged into can be used to authorize your log in.  To get an Authenticator app visit the app store for your device.  Do a search for Authenticator App.  You will find a number of apps, the easiest ones to use are Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-32-18-pm

Once you have your Authenticator App installed, here are the steps you need to follow for your Amazon Account.

  • To start, open your installed authenticator app, and scan the bar code on the page. On the app you will get a 6 digit code, enter that code on the box in the bottom of the page and click on Verify code and continue.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-43-14-pm

  • In the next section, you will select and set up a back up way to access your account via 2 factor authentication. This screen will let you set up either a phone call or text message to authenticate.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-44-56-pm

  • Lastly, just like in the text configuration, you will be prompted about issues logging in on some devices.  Just remember if log in doesn’t work (usually on an older device), just add the code that is sent to you to the end of your password.

screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-10-39-31-pm

And that’s it.  With that you should now have 2 factor authentication set up on your Amazon Account.

Samsung Note 7 Ban

0

In an emergency order, that was just issued, and goes into effect tomorrow Oct 15th @ 12p (ET), the US Department of Transportation has banned all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices from all airplanes going to/from the US, or traveling within the US. Samsung Note 7 Ban

What’s In The Order

In the order, the DOT states the following

What air travelers should know

  • If passengers attempt to travel by air with their Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices, the phones may be confiscated and passengers may face fines.
  • Passengers who attempt to evade the ban by packing their phone in checked luggage are increasing the risk of a catastrophic incident.  Anyone violating the ban may be subject to criminal prosecution in addition to fines.
  • Passengers currently traveling with Samsung Galaxy Note7 phones should contact Samsung or their wireless carrier immediately to obtain information about how to return their phones and arrange for a refund or a replacement phone. Samsung has provided guidance for customers about refund and replacement options, as well as how to contact wireless carriers, athttp://www.samsung.com/us/note7recall/[external link]. Samsung is also answering customers’ questions at 1-844-365-6197.
  • If an airline representative observes that a passenger is in possession of a Samsung Note7 device prior to boarding an aircraft, the air carrier must deny boarding to the passenger unless and until the passenger divests themselves and their carry-on and checked baggage of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 device. Passengers absolutely should not pack the phones in their checked luggage.
  • If a flight crew member identifies that a passenger is in possession of a Samsung Galaxy Note7 device while the aircraft is in flight, the crew member must instruct the passenger to power off the device, not use or charge the device while aboard the aircraft, protect the device from accidental activation, including disabling any features that may turn on the device, such as alarm clocks, and keep the device on their person and not in the overhead compartment, seat back pocket, nor in any carry-on baggage, for the duration of the flight.

For those who still have a Note 7

For additional information on returning your recalled Galaxy Note7 device to the manufacturer, call 1-800-SAMSUNG or 1-800-726-7864 or visit the website: http://www.samsung.com/us/note7recall/[external link]

How To: Removed From People Search Sites

0

Did you know that for a couple of bucks, without leaving the comfort of your home, anyone could easily become a stalker? In this day and age of information available at the press of a button, it doesn’t take much or cost much, to find out almost anything you want about anyone. Removed From People Search Sites

How To

If you have a driver’s license or id, if you have a bank account or purchased a home or rented housing if you had a job, have a phone number, or have done just about anything that involves leaving your home or having contact with the outside world, you have a public record. Removed From People Search Sites

Issue With Online People Search Sites

Companies like Been Verified, Spokeo, PeopleSmart, MyLife, Intelius, People Finder, Peek You, and People Finder are all getting paid for selling your information.  Keep in mind, I know I didn’t give them the right to access and sell my information, and for 99.9% of you, I know you didn’t either.  They claim that all they are doing is making public information more accessible.

Remove Yourself From 4 Online People Search Sites

Here is the thing, in the past if someone wanted to become a stalker they would need to make a public appearance in a courthouse, local government office, or at a private business.  Once there they would have to be seen by another individual and fill out forms to access public information, all the while being seen by lots of people and recorded by security cameras.  The average person, would not go through all of that, so your information, even if the public was fairly private.

NOT ANYMORE. Now I could get up at 2 am in my underwear (sorry about the mental image), and get online, use a prepaid credit card I bought at a gas station, connect to one of these sites using a proxy service (which is free), and no one would know (at least not easily) who actually got the information. If that doesn’t concern you, especially about your privacy, it should.  If nothing else, it should make you mad knowing others are making money from your identity without your consent.

So with all that being said what can you do???  Well, it is possible, even though for some sites NOT EASY, The following information covers some of the most popular people search companies on the web and how to get yourself removed from their records.

Removed From People Search Sites

Getting Yourself Removed

spokeo

  • Spokeo –  Search your name on the site (if that doesn’t work, try your maiden or former name). Once the list of names comes up, select See Results Now next to your name. Once your specific listing comes up, copy the complete URL (web page address info) from the top of the page.

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-1-29-29-am

Go to the opt-out page, paste the URL, and enter your email address to remove the listing. You may have multiple listings on Spokeo if you have moved or changed your name and will need to return to the opt-out page to remove each one. As I said, they don’t want to make it easy for you.

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-1-33-42-am

mylife

MyLife – This is the one that annoys me the most. They are also one of the hardest to get removed from because, even though they are a tech company that can pull public records from 1000s of places, they have zero ways to allow you to remove yourself from their systems online.

To remove yourself from MyLife, you will need to call 1-888-704-1900, press option 2, and wait to speak to a person. When they answer and be prepared to wait on hold for a bit, tell them that you want to remove your listing, and tell them that you found it by searching for yourself online (if they ask). They may also ask if you have a paid membership with them or get emails from them; the answer is no in both cases. Finally, they will ask for your name, age, current address, and sometimes a previous address before they’ll remove you. The company claims it will take up to 10 days to remove you. NOTE: Be prepared for a very hard sell on why you want to pay them to use their service. When they give you the hard sell, just tell them, You Want Nothing To Do With Them!!!

been-verified

BeenVerified –  Seems to have one of the easier ways to get removed. From the opt-out page of BeenVerified, search for yourself.  Once you find your listing, click on the Green “That’s the one” button.  That will take you to the Submit Your Opt-Out Request. Once you submit your info, keep an eye out for an email to verify your removal.  You will have to do this for each listing of you, so you do want to check and see if there is more than one listing for you.

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-2-10-04-am

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-3-05-19-am

Intelius – From the opt-out page, you will get prompted to verify your identification by attaching a scan of a driver’s license, passport, military ID, state ID, or employee ID from a state agency. The photo and driver’s license number should be crossed out. A notarized statement of your identity is also acceptable. Enter in an email address to receive a confirmation when your info has been removed, and type in any additional records found on the site in the Additional Information field.

FYI – Liquid Damage to iPhone / iPod Not Covered by Warranty

0
apple-logo

If you’ve seen the announcement for the iPhone 7, one of the key points Apple focused on was the fact that the iPhone was “water-resistant”.  If you look at one of the latest commercials from Apple, it again emphasizes the fact that the iPhone is Water Resistant.

However….don’t let that fool you.  One of the big keys of the iPhone (and iPods) is that “Liquid damage to iPhone or iPod isn’t covered by warranty”.

If liquid damages an iPhone or iPod (for example, coffee or a soft drink), the service for the liquid damage isn’t covered by the Apple one-year limited warranty or an AppleCare Protection Plan (APP). iPhone and most iPod devices that were built after 2006 have built-in Liquid Contact Indicators that will show whether the device has been in contact with water or a liquid containing water.

According to Apple –

An LCI will activate when it contacts water or a liquid containing water. The indicator’s color is normally white or silver, but when it contacts water or a liquid containing water, it will turn fully red. An LCI won’t activate because of humidity and temperature changes that are within the product’s environmental requirements.

screen-shot-2016-09-25-at-9-48-59-pm

Final Thought

So even though Apple keeps advertising the water-resistant features of the iPhone, it’s a good idea to try to avoid finding out for yourself.  As noted in the pictures above, if the LCI on your device (any device made after 2006) activates, then you will lose your warranty.

Updated: Yahoo Breach Announcement Confirmed

1

Updated 9/22/16 @ 3:15 pm (EDT).

Yahoo has now confirmed that it was breached, by what it calls “a state-sponsored actor” in 2014. The hack according to Yahoo affects at least 500 million accounts (and to that can we all say DAMM!). Per Yahoo,

The account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt) and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers.

If you haven’t changed your password since 2014 ( and even if you have), it’s HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you change your password. Also NOTE, yahoo said it may have also included security questions.  So you should change those too, and remember if you use a yahoo email as your sign-in on other sites, with the same password, change the info in all those places TOO! For additional info visit the Yahoo Account Security FAQ

Yahoo Breach Announcement Confirmed

——–Original Post——————

There have been many reports of a possible data breach at Yahoo, that could affect 200 million accounts. Yahoo even admitted that they were “investigating” the reports a few months back. Well, it seems now, if a report by Recode is correct, that Yahoo will admit, this week, it had a breach.

According to the report by Recode, a hacker by the name of Peace has the data and is selling it on what is known as the dark web.

So knowing this is a possibility, what should you be doing?

To-Do List

Do you have a yahoo account?  It doesn’t matter if you haven’t logged in since y2k! Do you have an account? If you opened an account and never went in to close it, you have an account.

  • Log into your yahoo account and change your password. If you haven’t used your yahoo account in years, CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT.

To Reset Your Password – Visit the Yahoo Info Page (https://login.yahoo.com/account/personalinfo) -> Log In and then click on Account Security -> Followed By Clicking on Change Password.

Yahoo Breach Announcement Confirmed

To Close Your Account – Visit the Terminating your Yahoo account” page (https://edit.yahoo.com/config/delete_user)
If you use a phone number to sign in – visit yahoo’s alternative account termination page (https://login.yahoo.com/account/action/delete_user) instead.

  1. Read the information under “Before continuing, please consider the following information.” Because terminating your Yahoo account also terminates account access to sites like HotJobs, Yahoo Mail, and Flickr among others.
  2. Confirm your password.
  3. Click Terminate this Account.
  • Do you have any other accounts that have you log in with an email address? Are any of those accounts using your Yahoo email as the user name? If the answer is yes, go to those accounts and change your password on those accounts. You may be asking why? Well 2 things
  1. Most people use the same password everywhere, so you need to change it.
  2. As remote as it may sound, if they have your account info they can log into your email and see emails from other accounts and know what you have/use. It’s not that crazy.

Final Thoughts

Yahoo is a shell of what it used to be, but back in the day, it was to the Internet what social media  (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. ) is today.  The breach is still “a rumor” as Yahoo themselves have NOT confirmed anything. It could be a false alarm or it could be one of the biggest ever. In either case, changing your password now and regularly on all your accounts  (as much of a pain in the asset as it is) is always a good idea.

Upgrade To macOS Sierra Coming 9/20

0
apple-logo

Update: macOS Sierra is now available. See more detail in the post macOS Sierra Now Available

As of tomorrow 9/20, Mac owners will have the option to upgrade to the new macOS Sierra operating system. Up to now, the Mac operating system was known as osX, but to get the naming in line with the other Apple product operating system (iOS, watchOS, etc.) this update will also update the name of the operating system. Over the past couple of months, Apple has been testing beta versions of the software with those who like to be on the cutting edge.  Those users who volunteered to download and test the beta versions have seen and reported bugs to Apple. Apple is now ready to release the final product.

macos

Here is what we know so far…..

Compatibility

Those with Macs that were released in late 2009 or newer will most likely be able to update to the latest version. The compatibility list is as follows

  • MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)

So how do you know when your Mac was released?  The simplest way is to click on the Apple logo on the top left corner of the screen, followed by clicking “About This Mac”. In the windows that pops-up you will find the Model (screen size and year released).

image

When Will It Be Available

We know it will be available on Tuesday 9/20/16, however, Apple didn’t announce the time that it will be released.  Based on previous Apple OS releases the most likely time that you should be able to get your hands on the update will be (approximately) 10 am PST (Pacific Standard Time). If you live in other time zones here is a general idea

  • New York (Eastern Time) – 1 PM
  • London (British Summer Time) – 6 PM
  • Moscow (Moscow Standard Time) – 8 PM
  • Delhi (India Standard Time) – 10:30 PM

On 9/21/16 (Due to Time Zones)

  • Beijing (China Standard Time) – 1 AM
  • Tokyo (Japan Standard Time) – 2 AM
  • Sydney (Australian Eastern Standard Time) – 3 AM

If you still are not sure what time corresponds to your time, you can use the Time Zone Converter at TimeandDate.com . All you need to do is set the time to 10 am and set the location to USA – California – San Francisco and the location to the nearest major city near you.

What’s New in macOS

macOS has a number of improvements and changes to the OS. Here are some of the more notable changes…..

  • Siri comes to Mac. For those with an iPhone, I’m sure you are well versed in using Siri. Now Mac owners will get a chance to use Siri, as their personal assistant as well.
  • Memories in Photos. With this change in photos, you will now see photos automatically grouped into events and you can then take the resulting collection and turn it into a short movie that Photos automatically edits and sets to music.
  • Auto Unlock with an Apple Watch. With this set up if you have an Apple watch, you will need to log into your pc initially, but after that, you will be able to use your Apple Watch (as long as it’s updated to watchOS 3.0) to log in for you.  (NOTE: you will probably need a Mac newer than 2013 to use this feature)
  • Copy on iPhone, Paste on Mac.  If you have an iPhone or iPad, you will be able to copy something you are looking at on your device (like a link for example) and paste it on your Mac without having to email it to yourself.
  • Apple Pay while using your Mac. If sites have this option, you will be able to pay for online purchases using Apple pay.  The advantage here is the security of NOT having to manually enter your credit card info onto a website and having the added security of using your Touch ID on your iPhone or by double-clicking the side button of your Apple watch.

These are just some of the new features coming to macOS.

Final Notes

  • As with all new toys, the 1st couple of hours after the release, everyone will be trying to get their hand on it.  You will probably find it a bit slow to connect and download the update. So waiting until later in the day should help if you are having issues getting it.
  • Apple has been testing the beta version for a few months now.  They are usually very good and finding and correcting bugs in the software before they release the final product, BUT they are NOT perfect.  There is bound to be something that they miss.  If you have a work-related or critical application on your Mac, you may want to wait a day or 2 to update. Usually, if they miss something, you will see it reported within a day or 2.
  • It is suggested you make a time machine backup prior to upgrading. That way if you find it necessary to revert back to osX, it is possible using your time machine backup. There are other ways to revert back but a time machine backup will be the simplest way.

Samsung Note 7 Recall (USA)

0

Seems the Samsung Note 7 is a HOT phone.  No, I mean like really hot, catching on fire hot. It seems of the 2.5 million Note 7 phones that have been sold there have been (something like) 35 reports of phones catching fire or smoking worldwide.  That doesn’t seem like a lot but if you are one of the people who had a burning or smoking phone, 1 is too many.  So the Samsung Note 7 is in recall worldwide, with Samsung looking into what is causing the issue.  The suspicion is that the phone battery while charging just gets too hot, and if you leave your phone connected after it’s fully charged, the battery just gets too hot and BOOM (no pun intended).

Samsung Note 7 Recall

What Can You Do With Your Existing Note 7

So you have a Note 7, and you obviously can’t go without a phone while you wait for it to be replaced.  This poses the question, what can you do??? Here are a couple of things you can do in the meantime

  • Turn off your phone if you want to fast charge or charge in general.
  • Do NOT leave your phone plugged in while you run your errands, go to bed, or do anything else where you aren’t paying attention to your phone.
  • Once your phone reaches 100% charge, remove it from the charger.  I know I’m guilty of leaving the phone on the charger after it was 100% charged.
  • Don’t use the phone or play games while it’s plugged in.
  • Place it in a cool (not hot) place during the charge. Just pay attention to where it is when you plug it in.  I’ve many people charge their devices on window ledges while the HOT sun is baking the unit.  The issue here is overheating, you don’t need to help the phone along by putting it in a hot place.
  • Take off those third-party cases.  In some cases just don’t let the phone “breath” as it was designed. So remove any covers, or cases while charging.
  • Use the original charger and cable.  Just because your significant other or your kid’s charger for their S6 or Nexus phone is right there doesn’t mean you should use it.  Each charger is designed for a specific device, so you should use what came with your device.

I know you are thinking, I just paid thru the nose for this thing, why do I have to now hop thru so many hoops? You are right in thinking that way, but until Samsung officially explains something more than they have so far and you can get your device replaced, it is better to be safe than sorry.

All the major US carriers have for the time being stopped selling the Note 7 and Samsung with their recall is offering 2 options for those who already have a Note 7.  Per Samsung in a news release this week

The U.S. Product Exchange Program will offer consumers the following choices:

1. Exchange current Galaxy Note7 device with a new Galaxy Note7 (available next week)
2. Exchange current Galaxy Note7 for a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and replacement of any Note7 specific accessories with a refund of the price difference between devices.

As a gesture of appreciation, consumers will receive a $25 gift card or bill credit from select carrier retail outlets when choosing a Galaxy S7 family device or the Galaxy Note 7 within the exchange program.

The 4 major cell phone providers in the US have the following

Sprint is working closely with Samsung to ensure those customers who already have purchased the device are taken care of. For those customers that previously purchased the Samsung Note7 we will offer them a similar device until the issue is resolved.

Samsung announced a voluntary recall of the Galaxy Note7 in response to an issue with the device’s battery. Because customer safety is our top priority, Verizon has stopped selling the Galaxy Note7. Additionally, through September 30, 2016, we are waiving the restocking fee for any customers who purchased a Galaxy Note7 and wish to return or exchange it.

As our customer, your safety is our number one priority. Due to the recall we recommend that you take advantage of our exchange program. We’re making it easy for you to exchange your Galaxy Note7 for free.

Because safety is our top priority, customers are strongly encouraged to exchange the Galaxy Note7 for a new device. Customers with a Note7 may select a Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S7 active, a new Galaxy Note7, or any other smartphone, and may also return any Note7 accessories. If a customer chooses another Samsung device, he or she will receive a bill credit of $25 per device.

So at this point, the best thing you can do is either take extra precautions until Samsung can make and send out replacement units to all the carriers worldwide (which should take a few weeks) if you wish to keep your Note 7, or you can as all the carriers have listed choose another model to move to.  Reach out to your individual carrier to get specifics on the procedure they are using.

Securing Your Wireless Network (Via OnGuardOnline.gov)

0

Today’s home network may include a wide range of wireless devices, from computers and phones to IP Cameras, smart TVs, and connected appliances. Taking basic steps to secure your home network will help protect your devices – and your information – from compromise.

Understand How a Wireless Network Works

Going wireless generally requires connecting an internet “access point” – like a cable or DSL modem – to a wireless router, which sends a signal through the air, sometimes as far as several hundred feet. Any device within range can pull the signal from the air and access the internet.

Unless you take certain precautions, anyone nearby can use your network. That means your neighbors – or any hacker nearby – could “piggyback” on your network or access information on your device. If an unauthorized person uses your network to commit a crime or send spam, the activity could be traced back to your account.

Use Encryption on Your Wireless Network

Once you go wireless, you should encrypt the information you send over your wireless network, so that nearby attacker can’t eavesdrop on these communications. Encryption scrambles the information you send into a code so that it’s not accessible to others. Using encryption is the most effective way to secure your network from intruders.

Two main types of encryption are available for this purpose: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). Your computer, router, and other equipment must use the same encryption. WPA2 is the strongest; use it if you have a choice. It should protect you against most hackers. Some older routers use only WEP encryption, which likely won’t protect you from some common hacking programs. Consider buying a new router with WPA2 capability.

Wireless routers often come with the encryption feature turned off. You must turn it on. The directions that come with your router should explain how. If they don’t, check the company’s website.

Tutorials for Turning Your Router’s Encryption On:

Limit Access to Your Network

Allow only specific devices to access your wireless network. Every device that is able to communicate with a network is assigned a unique Media Access Control (MAC) address. Wireless routers usually have a mechanism to allow only devices with particular MAC addresses to access the network. Some hackers have mimicked MAC addresses, so don’t rely on this step alone.

Secure Your Router

It’s also important to protect your network from attacks over the internet by keeping your router secure. Your router directs traffic between your local network and the internet. So, it’s your first line of defense for guarding against such attacks. If you don’t take steps to secure your router, strangers could gain access to sensitive personal or financial information on your device. Strangers also could seize control of your router, to direct you to fraudulent websites.

Change the name of your router from the default. The name of your router (often called the service set identifier or SSID) is likely to be a standard, default ID assigned by the manufacturer. Change the name to something unique that only you know.

Change your router’s pre-set password(s). The manufacturer of your wireless router probably assigned it a standard default password that allows you to set up and operate the router, as its “administrator.” Hackers know these default passwords, so change it to something only you know.  The same goes for any default “user” passwords. Use long and complex passwords – think of at least 12 characters, with a mix of numbers, symbols, and upper and lower case letters. Visit the company’s website to learn how to change the password.

Turn off any “Remote Management” features. Some routers offer an option to allow remote access to your router’s controls, such as to enable the manufacturer to provide technical support.  Never leave this feature enabled. Hackers can use them to get into your home network.

Log out as Administrator: Once you’ve set up your router, log out as administrator, to lessen the risk that someone can piggyback on your session to gain control of your device.

Keep your router up-to-date: To be secure and effective, the software that comes with your router needs occasional updates. Before you set up a new router and periodically thereafter, visit the manufacturer’s website to see if there’s a new version of the software available for download. To make sure you hear about the latest version, register your router with the manufacturer and sign up to get updates.

And when you secure your router, don’t forget to secure your computer too. Use the same basic computer security practices that you would for any computer connected to the internet. For example, use protections like antivirus, antispyware, and a firewall — and keep these protections up-to-date.

Protect Your Network during Mobile Access

Apps now allow you to access your home network from a mobile device. Before you do, be sure that some security features are in place.

Use a strong password on any app that accesses your network. Log out of the app when you’re not using it.  That way, no one else can access the app if your phone is lost or stolen.

Password protect your phone or other mobile devices. Even if your app has a strong password, it’s best to protect your device with one, too.

If your an owner of a Samsung device you have seen Milk Music app, which when launched in early 2014, was supposed to take on Apple’s iTunes Radio, Pandora, Spotify, and a number of other streaming music services. Well it seems that eventually the Milk had to spoil, and for Samsung the Milk spoils on September 22, 2016. Samsung Shutting Down Milk Music

According to a press release posted on the Samsung (US) Newsroom site, Samsung says that “…working with partners will accelerate innovation, enhance device sales and provide amazing new experiences for our customers”. That leads most to believe that Milk Music will be replaced with one of the existing music services for Samsung device users, however as posted on the release, “We have no additional details to share at this time”, means they aren’t saying who that will be.
