Classic Skype Is Not Dead Yet

0

This post goes out to all of those “Old School” folks that use Skype, and who were dreading the impending death of Skype 7.0 (AKA Classic Skype). Per Microsoft’s previous statements, as of September 1st, everyone was going to be required to move to the newest version of Skype. Well that so did not go over well with a large part of the Skype user base. Now that users voices have been heard and Classic Skype Is Not Dead Yet

What Originally Happened To Skype Classic

Originally Skype Classic was supposed to meet its untimely death on September 1st, 2018. Based on a post by Microsoft in July, it was going to force all users to move to the “Next Generation” Skype by that day and “Retire” the classic version.

Skype Classic Shutdown

Here is the rub, a large (and I do mean LARGE) part of the Skype user base out right HATES the “next generation” version of Skype, and they made sure Microsoft heard them. If you look at the (as of this post) 56 pages of comments on the announcement itself, the grand majority of the comments basically told Microsoft what it could go do with itself if they retired classic Skype.

What Did The Skype User Base Say

Like I said there are 56 pages worth of comments. Here are just a couple of very interesting ones from Skype users.

And Now The Retreat (For Now)

With all of the complaining about the new Skype. With the comments that it lacks enough essential features, that are currently found in the other version, Microsoft reverses course.  As seen in the Skype Forum “Based on customer feedback….”

Skype Classic Lives

The only question is, how long is this reprieve? Microsoft left the status of Skype Classic very much open.

How To Lock Windows PC Via Desktop File

Whenever I step away from my windows pc, I like to lock the screen. This way anyone who walked up to my pc, only gets to see the welcome screen. The easiest way I find to lock my pc is simply to have an icon on my desktop that says Lock Computer that I click on and the pc locks. In today’s post we will review the simple steps it takes to create the desktop icon. This is How To Lock Windows PC Via Desktop File

Win10 Lockscreen

Locking Your PC – Why?

If you walk away from your desk, even for a brief moment, do you lock your computer? You may not think it’s a big deal, but leaving your computer unlocked is a lot like leaving your car running with the doors unlocked. Just like anyone could jump in your car and take it, anyone could sit at your computer and gain access to your private information or impersonate you. So what could really happen

  • How many records do you keep on your pc? Do you have your bank or credit card accounts saved on the web browser, so that you don’t have to remember the info when you log in? Guess what the person at your pc just gained access to your banking or credit card information.
  • Do you have instant messages, emails, or documents on your pc that you consider private, that you don’t want anyone to know about? Guess what the person at your pc just saw those messages.
  • Do you save personal pictures on your pc that you don’t want anyone to see?  Guess what the person at your pc just saw those too.

Then there is the impersonate part.  Does the person that just got on your pc hold a grudge against you, or anyone else?

  • So now that person can send an instant message, email, or post to social media (again with the saved credentials), making it look like it came from you. They can say anything they want, and you will have to be the one who will have some explaining to do.  I’ve seen people get fired over this kind of situation.

Creating  The Desktop Lock File

To create the file, it’s easy and should take you a total of 3 steps.  Here are the 3 steps you need.

  • Go to your Windows desktop and right mouse click on an empty area of the screen. In the message that appears select New -> Shortcut

New shortcut 1

  • In the window that appears, either copy and paste or type the following (shown below) and click next.

rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation

create shortcut 2

  • In the next window, in the area that says to Type a name, just type Lock Computer, and click Finish

Lock computer 3

That’s it. Now when you look at your desktop, you should see an icon that says Lock Computer.

Every time you click that file, your computer will automatically lock. These instructions work for all versions of Windows.

Fake Alert: Facebook showing 25 Friends

Ok this is going to be a short post. While surfing on Facebook, how many of you have seen the post “Facebook has changed it’s algorithm, you need to say hello to me in comments to keep seeing my posts”? My guess is that most of you have because once something about Facebook is posted on Facebook everyone seems to believe it. So for starters let me confirm one thing, the message claim about having to say hello in comments or you wont be seen / The Facebook algorithm message is FALSE. For those lucky enough not to have seen it, this post will tell you what to look out for. Fake Alert: Facebook showing 25 Friends

The Message

The message you will see shared is….

Fake FB Algorithm Message

What Should Stand Out

So lets review a few key lines in this message

  • Their system chooses the people who will read your post.

No, in fact Facebook can do may things, but choosing who will read your post and then just not show others is not what it does.  If you are on selected to Top Stories then FB will sort your list based on popularity on the subjects of posts. IE – The post about the latest gossip (Hollywood / Politics) may show up on your list before the post showing what someone had for breakfast.  However if you move to Most Recent , FB just shows you the postings in order.

  • If you are reading this message leave me a quick comment, a “hello”, a sticker, what you want…..

Notice it doesn’t say Tag Me.  Unless you tag someone when leaving them a message, the message is considered a basic message, not directed at anyone.  If you want to get someone’s attention you need to tag them.

  • Thank you for the heads up from those who already copied and pasted the above. Hold your finger down anywhere in this post and “copy” will pop up. Click “copy”, then go to your page, start a new post on your page, then put your finger anywhere in the blank field. “Paste” will pop up and click paste and voila, you’ve just copied.

This one should ALWAYS be the giant warning flashing in front of you.  If you ever see a message that says you need to copy and past the message instead of sharing it, you should instantly say to yourself NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • There is also the variation to the post that claims.

fake snoops message FB

Note there is NO link in the “I checked Snopes”.  That’s because if you look at Snopes, they tell you this is fake.

So DON’T be that person, and check out how valid things really are on posts that ask you to copy and paste. Know before you share.
