How Legit Is The Facebook Malware Cleanup Message

As a tech, one of the most common questions I get about Facebook concerns people who get a pop up while on Facebook that their system needs to be cleaned. The question usually consists of “I got a message about my computer being infect on Facebook, is that message legit”.

In 2014, Facebook partnered with F-Secure, Trend Micro and ESET to give Facebook visitors who have computers that show signs of being infected a way to clean their computers.

Here’s how it works: if the device you’re using to access our services is behaving suspiciously and shows signs of a possible malware infection, a message will appear offering you an anti-malware scan for your device. You can run the scan, see the scan results, and disable the software all without logging out of Facebook—making it seamless and easy to clean up an infected device.

It’s helpful that Facebook is trying to help its users keep their computers malware free, however, the problem is that most people haven’t been conditioned to think any offers from Facebook are fake. Everyone who uses Facebook has heard of a death hoax post, apps that lets you track who unfriended you, or free tickets to somewhere.

Even though the offer to clean your pc, is a legit offer from Facebook, it’s still a good idea to be skeptical and do your research before you agree to anything you see on Facebook, or anywhere on the web for that matter.

Flash Player Upgrade Required Fake Message

‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ Fake Message

Criminals typically use the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message to deliver Trojans and other malware disguised as fake updates for Adobe Flash. The ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message has been linked to scams on social networks, such as Facebook, in which a fake viral video will be posted repeatedly – usually promising attractive women, outrageous stunts or a great special offer. Regardless of the supposed content of the video, clicking on its link will result in the appearance of the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message. Of course, if you click on this message in order to ‘update’ the Flash Player, the file that will be downloaded will probably be anything but a legitimate update for Adobe Flash. Criminals use the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message to distribute Trojans that are designed to deliver rogue security programs or open up a backdoor into the infected computer system. Flash Player Upgrade Required

Flash Player Upgrade Required Fake

Websites associated with the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message will often carry other kinds of malware threats or attackers that try to exploit security vulnerabilities in your Internet browser or operating system. If you get this message while you are surfing, you should close your Internet browser (which most likely will be Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome) and then scan your computer for any possible malware infections. YOU SHOULD NEVER EVER (EVER EVER) click on the actual “Flash Player Upgrade Required” message.

image

Possible Sources of the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ Fake Message

The ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message is linked to social media scams in which infected users will post some kind of video which will then refuse to play and instead display the insidious message. However, the ‘Flash Player Upgrade Required’ fake message has also been linked to streaming video websites, which lure their victims with promises of pirated movies, or to porn sites promising “stolen” or “secret” pictures and videos of someone famous naked or having sex,  and instead are simply vehicles for distributing dangerous Trojan and rootkit infections through social engineering and deceptive practices.  At this point you may be thinking, I don’t go to any of those kind of sites, like was previously said, these kind of fake pop up messages can come up at any time and from any site that has been compromised, no matter how big or famous the site is.

image

Another thing to keep in mind, when you attempt to close the window for the fake “Flash Player Upgrade Required” message, you may see other non-flash messages, which are also fake. Messages like “Warning: Your pc may have critical security vulnerabilities…”. The message looking like it’s coming from your ISP and asking you to call a phone number.  The number and the message (I can promise you) DO NOT COME FROM YOUR ISP. If you do a web search for the number that comes up, you will see that it’s actually from Eastern Europe or Russia. Again, the criminals are trying to use social engineering to get into your machine or get your personal data.

Solutions If You Have Fallen For Fake Message

Of course it can’t be repeated enough times, if you see a fake message like these you should immediately close the browser. However, if you have clicked these messages here are some option for you to follow

image

  • Use an alternative browser – Have more than one browser installed.  If you’re using IE, for example, and you can’t seem to access the internet all of a sudden, you should open and try Firefox, Chrome, Safari, or whatever other browser you have installed. Sometimes the malware only affects the browser that was open when you get the fake message.
  • Start Windows in Safe Mode – If you can not access your Window’s desktop, reboot your computer in ‘Safe Mode with Networking’ by pressing the F6 key while the computer is starting up. Safe mode will only start a minimal number of functions required to run windows.
  • Check Your Version Of Flash – If you want to check your computer to see if you are using the latest version Flash, visit the Adobe Flash site.

Final Thoughts

As a tech, cleaning up computers that have been infected with malware like this means I get to charge $300 to $400 minimum.  However, I will be very happy if people learn to avoid these situations. I would love to be able to focus on other things, instead of malware clean up.

Homeowners in Oklahoma Find Their Homes For Rent On Facebook

Homeowners in Oklahoma Find Their Homes For Rent On Facebook.

In another example of social media being used to scam people, a Facebook page called Rent Homes was set up advertising homes for rent in the Tulsa Oklahoma area, that promised rental homes for a $30 dollar application fee and rent that could be paid via PayPal or a reloadable money card that you can get the most stores. “Someone is advertising houses for rent in Tulsa on Facebook, but the problem is the houses are not actually for rent and the person doing the advertising has no claim to the homes”.  The following report from NewsOn6 In Tulsa shows the importance of doing your homework, and not just believing what you see online. Though the Facebook page has since been removed, it’s a good reminder to always double and triple-check your Facebook sources before committing money to anything you find on Facebook, especially if it’s a massive purchase like real estate. Some of the tips to keep in mind, especially with real estate

  • Meet In Person
  • Get Private Tour
  • Make sure they have keys to the front and back door
  • Check and make sure the house is not on a foreclosure list
  • Ask to see ownership papers

7 Things You Can Do For FREE to Speed Up Your PC

As a computer tech, one of the most common comments I hear is “My computer is so slow!!!” Something about turning on your computer and then being able to go get some coffee, run some errands, and make a few phone calls, before you finally get to your desktop. If not that once you are on your computer and clicking on a program like your internet browser or office program and waiting for 10 to 15 min (or more) before you see it on the screen. Those are just some of the more frustrating situations when your pc is not running at optimum speed. Speed Up Your PC

Because of marketing and a general non-understanding on how computers work, most people treat their computers the same way they treat their TV. Your TV has a remote control, and an on/off switch, you click it and it turns on and off. However, a computer is actually more like your car than your TV. A computer needs a tune-up (defrag), oil change (software updates), and sometimes requires major repairs (hard drive or memory replacements).  If you watch TV you regularly see commercials for products that claim they double your speed or make your pc fast, however, you don’t have to pay to fix your pc, as making a slow-running computer run faster is often easier than you think.

Here are some steps you can take to make your pc run faster

Around The Web – Watch Out Where You Take A Selfie

0

Everyone has seen someone out there taking a selfie. However for one tourist a selfie almost cost him his life. While on a trip in Peru Jarad Frank decided he wanted to take a picture next to a freight train, and he got just a little to close. The video which has gone viral with more than 11 million views shows, the conductor clearly yells at Jarad followed by a kick to the head to get him to move out of the way. So remember when taking selfies next to a moving object, please make sure that object isn’t close enough to hit you. Around The Web – Watch Out Where You Take A Selfie

Saying Goodbye To Another Internet Original – Winamp

0

Long before we had iTunes, Google Music, Pandora and all the other current music services, we had software like Winamp. Originally released on April 21, 1997, Winamp became the go to software during the late 90’s. Yesterday, a post appeared on the Winamp site announcing

Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release. Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years.

Celine Dion Has Died – Another Facebook Scam

0

One of the most common social engineering tricks that the bad guys use to trick people into clicking on scams involves using “sensational headlines”. From car crashes to a famous person naked, to the death of a famous person, there is something about the message that makes at least a portion of the social media user base click to find out details. Of course, the bad guys go out of their way to make the message look like it comes from a legit source and will fill in details that “could” just be possible. Another Facebook Scam

The latest famous person to be killed on social media is Celine Dion. Over the past couple of days, people on Facebook have been coming across messages that appear to be from “Breaking News” from either CNN or Fox News announcing the supposed death of the singer. The message in fact will install a rogue Facebook app on your account.

If you happen to come across these messages, rest assured that Celine Dion is still alive, and you should inform the person who posted the message that their account has been compromised. By clicking on the message a rogue app installs on your Facebook account that continues posting these messages on your wall. For those who just couldn’t help it and click on the message, you can use the following steps to clean up your Facebook account.

Removing Apps On Facebook

How do I remove a game or app that I’ve downloaded?

All the apps you use are listed in the My Apps page of your App Center. Remove an app by hovering over its name or icon and clicking the X that appears on the right.

You can also remove an app from your Settings. To do this:

  1. Click the wheel icon (as seen below)at the top right of any Facebook page and choose Account Settings
  2. From the menu in the left column, select Apps
  3. Click X to the right of any app you’d like to remove

Once you confirm you’d like to remove the app, it should no longer be able to post to your timeline. Past stories from the app may still be on your timeline.

  • Once you remove the Rogue app from your Facebook account, your through your Timeline (not the newsfeed) and delete any posts that the rogue app may have made.

Q&A – Quick Fix For A Misbehaving iPad / iPhone

I received this question in a message last week, for the 1st time, and since then I have had 5 others ask. I know 5 isn’t a lot, but if 5 are asking always assume 50 are having the issue. The other 45 just don’t know who to ask or what to ask. So here is a quick Q&A answer to a misbehaving iPad question. Misbehaving iPad / iPhone

PROBLEM: My iPad screen has decided it likes the horizontal position and will NOT let me get her back on her feet. I know about the “Lock Rotation” button, and it is in the “off” position. I can’t seem to get her off her back. It’s driving me nuts because while I can position the iPad vertically and can see the home screen icons VERTICALLY, when I click on something, say Facebook, Pinterest, or even Words with Friends, it gets horizontal again and I CANNOT for the life of me, get her to rotate vertically.

Sooooooo……. any ideas? Advice?

Simple Way To Add The Start Menu To Windows 8

Windows 8 has now been available for a couple of weeks, and the BIGGEST complaint I get from clients is the missing start menu. It just seems that some things are just not that easy to do without. Since August 24, 1995, when Windows 95 was released, people have had a start menu until now. Here is a review of the Windows Start Menu and a simple way to add the start menu to Windows 8

  • The Windows 95 Start Menu

  • The Windows 98 Start Menu

  • The Windows 2000 start menu

  • The Windows XP Start Menu

  • The Windows 7 Start Menu

  • The Windows 8 Tile Screen

The way Windows 8 and the tile screen were designed, all the settings that people know are still there, however, they are not where most people are used to. The lack of a start menu just makes that change abundantly clear. So for those who would be more comfortable with a start menu and settings that look like what you have had since 1995 here is a simple and short procedure to add a start menu to Windows 8.

Adding The Start Menu

From the desktop browser in Windows 8, visit the Ninite website. Once on the Ninite website, scroll 2/3 of the way down the page and look under the Utilities section for Classic Start.

  • Select Class Start and then scroll to the bottom of the page and select Get Installer

  • Lastly you will see a pop up asking you to run or save (depending on what browser you are using). Just click Run.

Once you have done that, the installer will do the rest and when it completes you will have the Start Menu back on Windows 8

Solution to Mac Error “The Software for this printer is currently unavailable”

When you are using a Mac, people expect things to just work. For installing a printer, I should just click when it lists the printers (Under system preferences – printer), click Add, and the Mac should do the rest. That’s why people buy Macs because they just work…..or do they? One of the errors I’ve been coming across more and more involves the following error message when trying to install a printer. Solution to Mac Error “The Software for this printer is currently unavailable”

The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software.

What will happen when you see that error message, is that the installation will not complete and you will not be able to use the printer with your Mac. For those running into this issue (like I was with a number of clients), here are the 3 solutions I found that fixed the issue

Solution #1

If you get that error when attempting to install the printer, cancel your installation. Followed by clicking on the Apple logo on the top left of your screen (it’s the Apple Menu Bar) and selecting Software Update after connecting the printer, this will trigger the successful download of the correct drivers. Once the download is completed, the Add Printer option should automatically install the printer once selected.

Solution #2 (If #1 Didn’t work)

If after you run the Apple Software Update, you still have the issue, do the following

  • Open Launchpad -> click on System Preferences
  • Now click on the Print & Scan icon inside the System Preference window.
  • And inside the printer window, either hold the control key (on the keyboard) and click on the printer or right mouse click over the list of printers.

reset-printer-mac

  • When you see the box that says “Reset Printing System”, click here

What this will do is uninstall all of your printers, and reset the Mac Printer software.  Once reset you will have to reinstall all of your printers (if you have more than 1), but you should now be able to install them with no problems.

Solution #3 (If both 1 and 2 have failed)

My issue happened when trying to install a Brother 2270 DW printer. I will list the drivers for that printer in section #3, however, these same steps work with any other model printer (just insert the name of your printer into these instructions)

Download the driver from Brother (or from the website of whatever printer manufacturer you have) and double-click the downloaded one. Run the install from that download, like normal. When the installation completes you will find that the printer is still not listed in your printer list.  At this point, do the following

  • Click the plus on the Printer and Scanner window and select the printer “Add other printer and scanner”

printer-install-Brother

  • Once that next window opens, select the printer.
  • Now on the bottom choice change “Print Using” to Other and browse to the folder where you downloaded the original file that you installed at the beginning of step 3.
  • In the next window search for your model printer, and select your printer.
  • Following the remaining install process (which you can leave as default)

Your printer should now complete the installation process.
