Live Listen On iOS – It’s Not Actually A Security Issue
After Apple released iOS 27.2, many describe Live Listen as a security issue. Countless social media posts say that Live Listen is a security issue. With these same posts advising people to turn live listen off. The posts say that Apple released this feature on by default. Today’s post will review what is the reality with Live Listen, and it’s more of a misunderstanding than a security issue.

What Is Live Listen
Live Listen is an iPhone/iPad accessibility feature that turns your device into a remote microphone and streams sound directly to AirPods, Beats headphones, or compatible hearing aids, helping you hear conversations more clearly in noisy environments.
What Live Listen Does
- It uses your iPhone’s built‑in microphone to pick up sound and send it to your connected AirPods, Beats, or Made‑for‑iPhone hearing aids.
- It is designed as an accessibility tool for people who are hard of hearing, not a spying feature.
- It helps you hear someone speaking across a room or in a noisy place like a restaurant.
and this one is the IMPORTANT ONE
- It requires the nearby listening device (whatever you are using as the hearing aid), to be connected to the same Apple Device as your phone or iPad.
If you don’t need hearing aid device, or plan to use your beats headphones / AirPods as a hearing aid device, it is just fine to turn this off, just to have unnecessary functions off. However, having the function on does not cause a security issue for your device.
To Access The Settings For Live Listen
If you want to find the settings for live listen go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio & Visual (under hearing) -> and select Live Listen.

In the window that opens, you will find the setting that says Live Listen -> Remote Control. Turn off the setting there.

- Open Control Center on your iPhone or iPad
- Click on the + icon in Control Center followed by clicking Add a Control
- In the section for Hearing Accessibility, click on Live Listen (you can also search for it in that area)
- Once added, you can close the Control Center
- To Use Live Listen
- Connect your AirPods, Beats, or hearing aid to your iPhone or iPad
- Open Control Center
- Click on the Live Listen button that you added earlier
- Place your device in front of the person you want to hear. You can control loudness by adjusting the device volume.
Final Thoughts
If you don’t need a hearing aid device, turn live listen off, no problem. Even if you don’t have an “official” hearing issue, if you are in a noisy room, live listen may be beneficial. Either way, the live listen feature is NOT a security issue.
