Messages App New Feature In 27.2 Apple Updates

For those with devices that updated to the latest Apple software version (27.2 of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, visionOS), Apple has added a new feature to the Message App. With this feature, called Suggested Actions, the Messages app can offer suggested actions based on the context of the message. Today’s post will go over this new feature.

What Can Suggested Actions Do For You

When using the Messaging App, if anyone sends you a message with a date, a meeting request, a reminder, or an address (for example), the suggested action pop up window can appear with an option to

  • Create an even in Calendar from a listed time
  • Add a entry in Reminders
  • If an address is given, open the location in the default Maps app

According to information provided by Apple,

To preserve user privacy, the framework analyzes the message content you provide on-device and doesn’t send it to Apple servers.

The function does not take up space on the screen, by default, as messages that can use Suggested Actions show up underlined, and it requires you to click on the underlined message for the pop up window to appear.

Messages Example 27.2

To Turn Off Suggested Actions

The Suggested Actions feature has functions that cover

  • Add to Calendar
  • Add to Reminders
  • Add to Notes
  • Show in Maps
  • Flights and Packages

If you want to review or turn off settings for Suggested Actions, you need to go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Suggestion Actions where you will find the options for the feature

If you don’t wish to use any of these functions, you can turn them off on that screen. In addition, if you dont use any one of the Suggestion options for 30 days, the system will automatically turn them off. You would need to go to the same screen to turn the option back on, if that happens.

**NOTE: If you have an older Apple device that can’t update to the 27 version of software, you will not be seeing this feature.

Final Thought

This feature is not being forced on the end users by Apple, like many of the AI features seem to be these days. It is an option and can easily be managed depending on your preference.
