For starters, What is WhatsApp? If you aren’t familiar with WhatsApp, it is the worlds most popular free messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service, that is owned by (who else but) Facebook. The service with 2 billion users, as of February 2020, allows users to send/receive text and voice messages, make voice and video calls (on the mobile app), and share images, documents, and other media. In it’s standard configuration, other users on your friends list can see when you are online.
How Not To Be Seen Online While Using WhatsApp
As just noted, WhatsApp shows users when you are online under its standard configuration. A majority of the time, letting others know you are online is great, so that people know they can reach you.
However there are times, like during meetings, where you may want to look for something on WhatsApp but you don’t want (or can’t afford) to be messaged by people on your list. So how do you go “offline” while on WhatsApp. The following steps will go over doing just that.
- Step one go into your settings on WhatsApp once the app is open. With Android, click on the 3 dots on the top right of the app, and then click on settings. For iOS, click on the settings icon on the lower right of the app.
- Once you are in settings, click on account
- In the window that opens, click on the privacy icon
- Now under Privacy, click on Status (which says My Contacts by default)
- Lastly, select Only Share With, and select no one or only those you wish to see your online status.
Final Thought
It takes a few hoops to limit having others see that your online, but it is possible.
