Non-Scheduled Update Released For iOS 26
Apple has released an emergency (non-scheduled) update for iOS 26. The update fixes a flaw in Apple’s rendering framework, which they call CoreGraphics. The flaw, according to Apple CVE-2026-86950
Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on versions of iOS before iOS 27.
How To Get The Update
Apple is recommending all users on iOS version 26 to update as soon as possible. This update is available for
iPhone 11 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd generation and later, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 8th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later
To get the update from your iPhone or iPad, go to
- Settings -> General -> Software Update
On the window that opens, you will find the option to update now or later tonight.

For those looking to move to the latest version, which is iOS 27, you could do that instead of updating to iOS 26.7.1. On the same update page, scroll down to the bottom; you will find the Upgrade to iOS 27 option.

For Those Upgrading To iOS 27
In iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple added several new features, but the one that is getting the most attention is Apple Intelligence / Siri AI. While all phones that are on iOS 26 can move to iOS 27, there is a limited number of devices that will be able to use Apple Intelligence / Siri AI. AI feature is limited to newer devices.
- iPhone 11 → iPhone 15 / 15 Plus: iOS 27 but no Apple Intelligence
- iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 and newer: full Apple Intelligence suite
Final Thought
If you are not interested in moving to iOS 27 yet because you don’t like to move to new versions until “They work out the bugs,” or you have a specific app that needs to stay on iOS 26 to function, you really should update to iOS 26.7.1 as soon as possible. If the flaw is being exploited already, that just means you will eventually do something to put you at risk.
