overqualified

It has become the new trend for turning down jobseekers and is something even I myself have been told in the past – you haven’t got the job because you are overqualified. Employers will have their reasons for such a peculiar statement; perhaps they can’t see themselves working with you as your personalities could clash, they are scared you are too ambitious and might overthrow their position after a few months in the job or have decided they simply don’t like the look of you, so they come out with the unimaginative, mind-numbing overqualified line. Examine the phrase carefully though, and it is obvious that it is impossible to be overqualified.

Yes, you can be underqualified for a job; you can not have enough academic qualifications proving your caliber for the role or are perhaps too inexperienced for a certain position but to be overqualified? When was the last time somebody won the lottery, only to find they couldn’t have the millions they had just won because they already have a thousands in their saving account – they are overqualified to receive the money? Is Bradley Wiggins ever told that he can’t buy a train ticket because, as a top cyclist, he is overqualified to be travelling on public transport? When was the last time David Beckham took his family out to Burger King for dinner because a meal at Ramsay’s would be far too tasty for them – after all, Gordon Ramsay is overqualified to cook dinner for the Beckhams!

The answer to all of them? Never. So why is it employers think that saying you are too qualified for a job is a sufficient excuse not to give you one?

Does a company not want the best candidate to be given the role? Would they rather hand it to the least impressive candidate? Unlikely. Do they simply not want to progress with someone overqualified on their team? Unlikely. So why has it become a term used to deflect people away from jobs? A candidate knows the level of a job they are applying for – clearly they are happy to work at level hence the initial application. Because of a tight employment market with millions of out-of-work executives, candidates often pursue job openings beneath their norm. This is nothing new – jobs are hard to find at the moment so if you have a wealth of skills and experience, you should fit into any company that suits your trade.

The truth is, not only is hearing you’re overqualified a baffling proposition, but it devalues many years of a candidate’s life. All that time they spent studying for their qualifications or gaining experience has amounted for nothing because they are now too qualified to do a job. Perhaps they should have spent their days in education making paper airplanes and throwing them round the playground instead? Maybe then they would be able to secure a job?

The truth is, you can’t be overqualified but such a term is an easy way of deflecting a candidate away from the real reason that they have not been offered a job. You do not fit with the company’s image and tone, they are wary of your ambition, they don’t like you personally or perhaps you don’t fill new government rules that state you have to hire at least one person with only one hand and four eyes to be dubbed a fair, equal employer – whichever excuse they have, overqualified just doesn’t cut it. In fact, you have to ask yourself why you are even reading this blog? You’ve learned the alphabet haven’t you? Then move on, you’re far too qualified to be reading this!

This is a repost from Jared Jargon (LINK: http://www.jadedjargon.co.uk/overqualified/ (http://www NULL.jadedjargon NULL.co NULL.uk/overqualified/)). With all the people unemployed or under employed, I think this post is very appropriate for the times. Thank you goes out to John Edden (Friend of Tech Geek and More) for allowing the repost.

Cell Phone: For those looking to get out of your Sprint contract without paying Early Termination (ETF) Fee

sprintlogo  I’ll start this post by saying that I’m a long time satisfied Sprint customer.  I’m not currently looking to leave Sprint to go to another carrier. Sprint is currently the only U.S. Cell carrier with true unlimited data, going to Verizon or AT&T will get you Data Caps and T-Mobile will get you Data Throttling.

With that being said, someone out there may want to get out of their contract because they are in an area without good Sprint reception, or maybe to get out of individual contracts just to get on a family plan, or a number of other reasons. For whatever your reason is (and the iPhone shouldn’t be one as its expected that Sprint will be offering the iPhone 5), you now have a chance to get out of your contract without having to pay the early termination fee.

How do you get out of your contract, you ask, well the reason is on your latest bill. Sprint has announced a change to the “Terms & Conditions” of your Sprint account. The following was on your latest Sprint bill

Terms & Conditions Changes for Consumers

Effective 9/9/11, the Administrative Charge will increase to $1.50 per line for customers that receive the charge. For details, visit sprint.com/taxesandfees. In addition, the Sprint consumer Terms (Ts&Cs) are changing. Please review them carefully at your local Sprint store or sprint.com/termsandconditions.

Here is why this change is important to those who want to get out of their Sprint contract. In a different section of the Sprint Terms and Conditions…
(LINK: http://shop2.sprint.com/en/legal/…conditions (http://shop2 NULL.sprint NULL.com/en/legal/ NULL. NULL. NULL.conditions))

When You Don’t Have To Pay An Early Termination Fee
You aren’t responsible for paying an Early Termination Fee when terminating Services: (a) provided on a month-to-month basis; (b) consistent with our published trial period return policy; or (c) in response to a materially adverse change we make to the Agreement as described directly below.
Our Right To Change The Agreement & Your Related Rights
We may change any part of the Agreement at any time, including, but not limited to, rates, charges, how we calculate charges, or your terms of Service. We will provide you notice of material changes—and may provide you notice of non-material changes—in a manner consistent with this Agreement (see “Providing Notice To Each Other Under The Agreement” section). If a change we make to the Agreement is material and has a material adverse effect on Services under your Term Commitment, you may terminate each line of Service materially affected without incurring an Early Termination Fee only if you: (a) call us within 30 days after the effective date of the change; and (b) specifically advise us that you wish to cancel Services because of a material change to the Agreement that we have made. If you do not cancel Service within 30 days of the change, an Early Termination Fee will apply if you terminate Services before the end of any applicable Term Commitment.

So now you’re wondering “what do I need to do to get out of my contract”. Here are the steps required

- You need to call Sprint (by calling 888-211-4727 or *2 from your HTC EVO,  and select options 4, 5, 2). Online chat will NOT work for this.

- Once you speak to Sprint you MUST cite this specific fee increase (to $1.50) as the reason you wish to exit your contract

- If you get a Sprint Rep. that is uninformed, ask to speak to someone in retentions. The Retentions department are the ones with the most power and knowledge.

- This process must be done before September 30, 2011.

Even if you don’t want to leave Sprint, this may just be the excuse you need to speak to the Retentions Department at Sprint and see if you can negotiate a better deal with Sprint.

How to check a shortened URL to see if it’s safe to click (From Tech and Life)

The following post comes from the Tech and Life blog (A friend of TGM) (LINK) http://www.techandlife.com/ (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/). With the limitation of characters that you can use on Facebook and Twitter, one of the popular choices is the shorten the links you share. The problem is that by shorting links, it makes it harder to tell what are good links and what are links that you should avoid.  The original post for this story can be found at (LINK) http://www.techandlife.com/2011/08/how-to-check-a-shortened-url-to-see-if-its-safe-to-click/ (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/2011/08/how-to-check-a-shortened-url-to-see-if-its-safe-to-click/).

Unshorten URL (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Unshorten-URL NULL.jpg)

Yesterday I received email notification of a blog comment which I should check was spam and approve or trash. It looked like spam – a couple of words and a shortened URL. But was the link important or interesting? I was a little wary and knew that this could be a security risk, i.e. don’t click a link if you’re not sure where it’s leading or you don’t know the sender. If you come across a shortened URL on Twitter, you can hover your mouse over it and the full URL will often appear – but not always. So what can you do to check out a shortened URL before you click?

Unshorten the link

Paste the link into unfwd4.me (http://unfwd4 NULL.me/) or unshorten.com (http://unshorten NULL.com/) to see the full URL. You may then be able to decide if the link is reputable and worth following. Still unsure? Try the link scanners mentioned below.

Scan the link

Copy the shortened URL into LinkScanner Online (http://linkscanner NULL.explabs NULL.com/linkscanner/default NULL.aspx) or Online Link Scan (http://onlinelinkscan NULL.com/). They’ll scan the site and alert you if there may be a problem following the link. Or if you have time and want to try multiple antivirus engines, try the scanner at URLVoid (http://vscan NULL.urlvoid NULL.com/).

After you click the link

After you’ve decided to click, browser plugins like McAfee SiteAdvisor (http://www NULL.siteadvisor NULL.com/) and WOT (http://www NULL.mywot NULL.com/en/download) (Web of Trust) provide another tool you can use to alert you of known dubious or untrusted sites. I use McAfee and have found it to be fine. There are free and paid versions. The download link to the free limited version (SiteAdvisor) is currently at the bottom of their Downloads page. Web of Trust is also highly regarded in this fight against ‘clickjacking’ and avoiding malicious sites.

Shopping: Deal on Extended Battery HTC EVO 4G and EVO 3D

htc-logo  One of the biggest complaints I regularly get asked about the HTC EVO phones (Original EVO 4G and EVO 3D) concerns battery life.  Unfortunately, HTC decided to use the smaller 1500 mAh batteries as the default battery for the EVO and the (not much bigger) 1730 mAh battery for the EVO 3D. Because of this, the battery life on both phones is less than a day and for heavy power users can get as little as 3 to 4 hours of battery.

I have a simple and inexpensive solution, that will get the average user as much as 2 days and power users at least a full day (plus a little bit more) of battery life.

The suggestion is to get a replacement “extended” battery. The EVO 4G extended battery is a 3500 mAh battery. The cost including ground shipping (when you apply Coupon Code – htc20phones) is $12.79 for the EVO 4G.

image

The HTC EVO 4G extended battery can be found at HandHelditems (Link)http://www.handhelditems.com/premium-3500-extended-battery-door-p-159471.html (http://www NULL.handhelditems NULL.com/premium-3500-extended-battery-door-p-159471 NULL.html)

The extended battery for the EVO 3D is also a 3500 mAh battery. The EVO 3D battery will run you $15.19 (again, you need to apply coupon code – htc20phones to get the discount). It has the same shipping options as the EVO 4G.

image

The EVO 3D extended battery can be found at HandHelditems (LINK)  http://www.handhelditems.com/premium-extended-battery-with-back-cover-3500-grade-cell-p-171410.html (http://www NULL.handhelditems NULL.com/premium-extended-battery-with-back-cover-3500-grade-cell-p-171410 NULL.html)

Both batteries include a replacement back cover for your phone.  As these batteries as just a little bigger than the batteries that come with the phone, the original battery cover does not fit.

Lastly, Both batteries have a couple of shipping options. Ground shipping for FREE, Regular Express (3 to 5 days) and Priority Express ( 2 to 4 days) for an additional fee (which is based on your zip code), but I recommend staying with Ground Shipping.  I received my battery via ground in 4 days.

Shopping – Costco has a great deal on the Acer Iconia Tab

image

I was walking thru Costco yesterday when I came across the following deal

- Acer Iconia 32 gig running Android
- Case for Iconia

For $429.99

As an Iconia user (16 gig version) for the past couple of weeks, this is a tablet I can recommend. On average the 16 gig version goes for about $400 ( you can find a little cheaper but you have to search).
To compare, at Amazon the 32 gig version of the Iconia is $449.99 (and it doesn’t include the case)

Software: Apps review for tablets (based on the Iconia Tab A500)–Pt. 1

android   Since the beginning of the Android tablets, the biggest complaint I’ve seen on reviews are things like “The lack of Tablet apps in Android” or “Not many apps that are optimized for tablets” or … well you get the idea.  My biggest beef with all these reviews is that none of them seem to talk about what actually happens to apps that aren’t “optimized” when they get installed on a tablet, or list apps that don’t actually work on tablets, or even list a recommended apps list for tablets.

So my goal is not only to list a recommended apps list for tablets (based on what is installed on my Iconia Tablet) but also list apps that don’t work or have issues on tablets.  This list I’m sure will be an ever changing list.

You will find the link on the Android Apps for Tablets page (LINK) http://www.techgeekandmore.com/software-apps-review-for-tablets-based-on-the-iconia-tab-a500pt-1/

Notebook Software: Evernote, Part 2 of ?, Notebooks and organizing notebooks.

(This post is a continuation of a previous post http://www.techgeekandmore.com/2011/07/15/notebook-software-evernote-part-1-of/)

The reason to store something is that you might have a use for it later, and the reason to organize anything is so that we can use it later. Storage and organization are the two important features notebook software should focus on. To put it another way; What information am I looking to store and use later on? And, how can I best structure that information for quick and effective retrieval?

And while I don’t think you can think about one without the other I want to focus on the tools Evernote (Evernote.com (http://www NULL.evernote NULL.com)) gives you to organizing your information.

Evernote employs two methods of organization, the first being Notebooks. Notebooks are where your going to be storing your notes. I like to create my Notebooks around subject matter. This may mean different things to different people, and no two people are going to organize their notes in the same manner. For an example, a sales person might create a notebook for each of their clients, or they might organize by document type, or by project. A student my choose to organize his/her notes by subject, or by day entered in.

You might want to organize each of those Notebooks with a sub-Notebook, or a notebook within a notebook. In that case you can create what is called a Stacked Notebook. For an example: The student that has a notebook for each subject, might open up a Notebook in side their Science notebook for an upcoming project. Or for the sales person while each of their clients might get a different notebook, he might have a products stacked notebook with an individual notebook for all the products that he sells.

The choice is yours. Once the Notebook is created you can then add and create your notes to the appropriate notebook.

I use a few different notebook programs (OneNote, NoteCase, and Evernote), and to be honest I think that Evernote falls short on the stacked notebook feature. For one reason you can’t turn an existing notebook into a stacked notebook, you have to create a stacked notebook and add your existing notebooks to it. Second you aren’t allowed to create stacked notebook inside a stacked notebook. OneNote and NoteCase do a much better job with this feature, but that is for another post.

The second is with Tags and that is for next week.
