Alert: Another version of the “See who is looking at your profile” scam on Facebook

facebook In todays edition of Facebook scams to watch out for, is a new version of the “See who is looking at your profile” scam.  In the past, you would find messages like the following on your friends profiles….

image

If you clicked on the link, you risked compromising your Facebook account.  Seems the average user has hear of this enough that those who try and use this scam have now changed tactics…..

This one just came to my attention a short time ago.  Where someone on my list was tagged in pictures

image

As you can see the 3 pictures appear to be completely random.  If you place your cursor over any of the pictures you see the “LOL!! Me cant believe that you can see who is viewing your profile!…………”

If you were to click on any of the pictures, they will open in the Facebook picture viewer and at the bottom of the picture you will again see the message.

image

So lets go over this again.  If you see a message in Facebook that talks about “See who checks your profile” or anything even remotely like that.

DO NOT CLICK IT!!!!!

It is a scam, at minimum it will add messages to your profile that you don’t authorize, and at worst, it can compromise your Facebook account, allow for malicious use of your account and could even install other non-Facebook related malware/viruses on your pc.

Facebook does not allow in its terms of service for anyone to be able to give you the “see who checks your profile” information.  If anyone person or company says they can help you see that, THEY ARE LYING / IT’S A SCAM.

Update 4/4 @ 2p

The story just keeps getting bigger.  AP (via yahoo news) is now reporting

Among the affected are financial-service companies such as Capital One Financial Corp., Barclays Bank, U.S. Bancorp, Citigroup Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Ameriprise Financial Inc. and retailers including Best Buy Co., TiVo Inc., Walgreen Co. and Kroger Co.

The College Board, the not-for-profit organization that runs the SATs, also warned that a hacker may have obtained student email addresses.

Walt Disney Co.’s travel subsidiary, Disney Destinations, sent emails warning customers on Sunday. Hotel chain Marriott International Inc. issued a similar warning.

The complete AP story can be found at (LINK) http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110404/ap_on_hi_te/us_data_breach (http://news NULL.yahoo NULL.com/s/ap/20110404/ap_on_hi_te/us_data_breach)

****************************************************************************************************************************************

As reported in the Dallas Morning News (LINK) http://www.dallasnews.com/news/local-news/20110402-vendor-for-kroger-jpmorgan-chase-suffers-data-breach.ece (http://www NULL.dallasnews NULL.com/news/local-news/20110402-vendor-for-kroger-jpmorgan-chase-suffers-data-breach NULL.ece) , Epsilon who provides marketing services for a number of companies suffered a data breach, where someone was able to get unauthorized access into the Epsilon email system.

Epsilon themselves have released a press release (LINK) http://www.epsilon.com/News%20&%20Events/Press_Releases_2011/Epsilon_Notifies_Clients_of_Unauthorized_Entry_into_Email_System/p1057-l3 (http://www NULL.epsilon NULL.com/News%20&%20Events/Press_Releases_2011/Epsilon_Notifies_Clients_of_Unauthorized_Entry_into_Email_System/p1057-l3) , concerning the issue.

Originally in the Dallas Morning News story only JP Morgan Chase and Kroger Supermarkets were named.  Since then it has been confirmed that US Bank and DVR manufacturer TiVo are also affected (Others possible but not confirmed so far).  What is understood in all cases is that only the Name and Email Addresses of customers were compromised.  The problem with breaches like these is that the “bad guys” can now send fake emails to customers making them look like they come from affected companies in an attempt to trick the end user into giving up more information.

For those who think, I don’t shop at Kroger’s below is a list of some of the names that Kroger’s operates under. (LINK) http://www.thekrogerco.com/ (http://www NULL.thekrogerco NULL.com/)

Here is the notice that TiVo is sending out to their customers.

***UPDATE 4/3

It can now be confirmed that Disney and HSN are included in the information breach.

This is the notice that Disney is sending out

image

and Here is what HSN is sending out

Dear HSN Customer,

HSN values your trust and wants to make you aware of a recent incident. We learned from our email provider, Epsilon, that limited information about you was accessed by an unauthorized individual or individuals. This information included your name and email address and did not include any financial or other sensitive information. We felt it was important to notify you of this incident as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and have outlined below a number of email safeguards to help ensure your privacy online.

***What to look out for***

If you have given your information to one of the affected companies, you need to be on the look out for emails that look official and say things like

- We are updating our records and need to confirm the credit card on file

- Do to tax changes, we need to get your SSN# to update our records

Those are just possible examples, in any case if you get any email that asks for personal, credit card or account information, DO NOT RESPOND to any email asking for that kind of information.  Keep in mind that NO RESPONSIBLE COMPANY will EVER ask you for that kind of information via a random email.

Software: What to do Before / During / After a Malware infection.

computer virus This Malware thing is becoming such a common issue that its driving me up the wall (In My opinion).  I’ve been ask by many customers if its just tech’s creating these malware infections for job security.  Let me tell you that I can promise you no tech worth his knowledge wants this kind of job security.  (End of my Soapbox)

So what do you do with your computer to give you a fighting chance?  Here is what you should do

Now that your pc is not infected

1 – Verify that you have “Fairly recent”* version of antivirus software installed, and that the AV software at is installed is running the latest Definitions possible.

a – *What do I mean by fairly recent, if you find your antivirus software and it says anything less than 2009 in the name (as in Norton 2005, McAfee 2003, etc.) then its to old.  Antivirus software that old will just not have the information needed to keep up with the ever changing landscape

b – If its older than 2009, then I recommend just uninstalling it, and downloading a free Antivirus offering.  (See the next answer for recommendation)

c – What if you find that you don’t even have antivirus installed or that the one you have is old.  I recommend visiting www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com).  There you will find a selection of Free Up to Date antivirus offerings.  There are a couple of offerings, I would recommend MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), but you would not do bad with any of the ones listed.  Its at least better than the situation you were in.  All you need to do is put a check next to one you select, then at the bottom select “Get Installer”, and hit run when prompted.  It should download and install it for you.

image

**Remember to uninstall any old antivirus before installing its replacement, as pc’s don’t like to have 2 AV software running at the same time.

2 – Now that we have the AV situation address, you now need to add 2 pieces of free software to your install.  It is hoped that you never need to use them but it makes life much easier if you install them now, before you get infected.  (Think about it like car insurance, you don’t want to try and get the insurance after crash, same thing applies here for the software).

a – Go back to www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) and select Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Click on the “Get Installer” button at the bottom and then click run when prompted.  That should install both.

image

image

b – Once installed you want to open each of the 2 programs you just installed at least once to make sure they installed correctly, and also to update the programs to the latest definition files. You should also run a full scan with each of the 2 programs on all hard drives.  To make sure that nothing is hiding in your system.

c – If either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware finds anything during its scans it will tell you at the end and very simply help you clean up your pc.  (Just select the infected files found and select remove infected)

3 -   Lastly, go back to www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) , and select the following files

image

image

  • QuickTime
  • Flash
  • Flash (IE)
  • Java
  • .NET
  • Silverlight
  • Air
  • Adobe Reader

These are all programs that most average users have installed, and vulnerabilities in old versions of these programs are some of the most common ways that many of the bad guys use to infect pc’s. Once you have all of these selected, click on “Get Installer” and then click on run when prompted.

image

You may notice that I list www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) a lot in the options above.  Just to make it clear, Tech Geek and More has no direct or indirect participation with ninite.  Ninite is just a TGM recommended site, because they make updates simple, opposed to having to visit multiple sites to get the the updates accomplished. In addition, TGM appreciates the fact that when you install these programs via Ninite, they do not install Toolbars, or other junk that drives all Techs crazy (as we have to constantly uninstall Junk).

What to do once you do get infected

Unfortunately, even with taking every precaution imaginable its still possible to get infected. At the point of being infect here is what you need to do

1 – DON’T PANIC! (Seriously, if you panic you will not remember to follow the following steps and will probably make things worse)

2 – Immediately shut down the pc.

a – Try to do it by clicking on Start – Shutdown – Shutdown on the screen and if that doesn’t work, then just hold the power button on the pc until the pc powers off.

3 – Once the pc is off, power it back on and as soon as pc starts to boot press F8 over and over, until you get to the safe mode screen choices, use the up/down arrow to select safe mode with networking and hit enter

image

**Keep in mind that in safe mode your pc will look a little “odd”, that is normal.**

4 – Once you get into your pc, Go to start –> settings –> control panel –> and click on internet options –> then go to connections tab –> and click on LAN settings (toward bottom) and make sure nothing in that window is checked, if it is uncheck it, then click ok

image

5 – At this point if you have not installed SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes, go to Step#2 under “Now that your pc is not infected” (above) and follow those steps to install both programs.

6 – Once installed, start by running SuperAntispyware, and when prompted select yes to update definition files. Once definitions are updated, run a Full Scan on all your Hard Drives (That would be any drive that doesn’t hold a CD or DVD).

image

image

The scan will probably take 1 hour on most average sized drives (Average = 320 gig drives). Once scan is completed, select all files that show infected and then click on remove select.  That covers part of the process.  Now to the next part.

DO NOT REBOOT IF PROMPTED

7 – Now start Malwarebytes, and when prompted say yes to updating the definition file.

image

8 – Once updated, select Perform full scan and hit select

image

You will then be asked to select your drives, select all drives that don’t use CD or DVD and press Scan

image

The scan will probably take 1 hour on most average sized drives (Average = 320 gig drives). Once scan is completed, select all files that show infected and then click on remove select.  That covers part of the process.  Now to the next part.

IF PROMPTED AGAIN –> DO NOT REBOOT
9 – Now in Windows –> Go to start –> run –> and type msconfig
a – This opens the msconfig window.  Under the start up tab –> Uncheck all items listed.  (DO NOT touch any of the other tabs) and click ok.

image

IF PROMPTED TO REBOOT –> AGAIN SAY NO

There is 1 more step.
10 – Open up My computer and go to –> c:\ drive –> windows folder –> system32 folder –> drivers folder –> etc. folder and in that location find a file called hosts and double click it, when prompted select to open with notepad.

image

Once the file opens look for the following line “#    127.0.0.1       localhost”

image

As shown in the example anything below the 1st 127.0.0.1 needs to be deleted.  Then save your changes by clicking on File –> Save.

Once you have done all this reboot.

After the clean up in safe mode

After the clean up in safe mode, and the reboot, there are still a couple of things you need to do.

1 – You will need to reinstall your Antivirus product.  If you were infected, there is a chance that your AV product is compromised, if nothing else, it just makes sure its complete or gives you a choice to pick a new AV package. This is especially important if your AV software is a few years old.  Make sure to uninstall then reinstall.

2 – Using the Step#3 in the “Now that your pc is not infected” section. Make sure you update the programs listed in that section.

With that you should be back up and running.

Cell: AT&T to acquire T-Mobile (3/20/11)

attlogo In what surprised many, the announcement was made today that AT&T has entered into a cash-and-stock agreement with Deutsche Telekom to acquire T-Mobile (USA).  This will make AT&T the largest wireless provider in the United States  (LINK) http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/more-information-att-acquires-tmobile (http://newsroom NULL.t-mobile NULL.com/articles/more-information-att-acquires-tmobile)

An agreement was announced under which AT&T will acquire T-Mobile USA. The agreement is the first step in a process that, including regulatory approvals, is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months. Until then, we remain a separate company and continue to operate independently.

According to the announcement, for now the 2 companies will operate independently.

In honor of the pending merger, I post my favorite T-Mobile ad.

Software: Internet Explorer 9 – Is now available

microsoft After a year of previews, beta’s, and release candidates, Microsoft has now released the latest version of Internet Explorer 9. Internet Explorer 9 includes the following (From Microsoft – LINK: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9 (http://windows NULL.microsoft NULL.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9) )

Notification Bar

The Notification Bar that appears at the bottom of Internet Explorer gives you important status information when you need it, but it won’t force you to click a series of messages to continue browsing.

Search in the address bar

You can now search directly from the address bar. If you enter a website’s address, you’ll go directly to the website. If you enter a search term or incomplete address, you will launch a search using the currently selected search engine. Click the address bar to select your search engine from the listed icons or to add new ones.

New Tab page

The redesigned New Tab page displays the sites you visit most often and color codes them for quick navigation. A site indicator bar also shows how often you visit each site, and you can remove or hide the displayed sites anytime you like.

Enhanced tabs

Tabbed browsing allows you to move easily between multiple open webpages in a single window, but there might be times when you want to look at two tabbed pages at the same time. Tear-off tabs allow you to drag a tab out of Internet Explorer to open the tab’s webpage in a new window, and Snap it for side-by-side viewing.

Download Manager

Download Manager is a powerful new feature that keeps a running list of the files you download from the Internet and notifies you when a file could be malicious. It also lets you pause and restart a download—if you have a slow internet connection—and shows you where to find downloaded files on your computer. You can clear the list at any time

Pinned Sites

If you visit certain webpages regularly, Pinned Sites allows you access them directly from the taskbar on your Windows 7 desktop.

Streamlined design

The first thing you’ll notice when you open Internet Explorer 9 is the compact user interface. Most command bar functions, like Print or Zoom, can now be accessed by clicking the Tools button, and your favorites appear when you click the Favorites button. Otherwise, Internet Explorer gives you the basic controls you need, and lets the web take center stage.

DALLAS, March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — AT&T (http://www NULL.att NULL.com/gen/landing-pages?pid=3309)* today announced it has implemented international calling and texting support efforts for U.S. residential wireless and wireline consumers trying to connect with loved ones in Japan, following last week’s tragic earthquake and tsunami.

Effective beginning last week, March 11, and continuing through March 31, AT&T wireless postpaid customers will not be charged for:

  • International long distance usage from the United States and Puerto Rico to Japan
  • Text messages to Japan, originated from a U.S. wireless number

In addition, and also effective March 11 through March 31, residential wireline customers can seek credits for up to 60 minutes of direct dial calling to Japan:

  • Upon receiving their wireline bill, customers may call AT&T to receive adjusted calling for up to 60 minutes. In other words, no charges for up to 60 minutes of call time from the United States to Japan between March 11 and March 31.

“We want to help our customers connect with loved ones in Japan in anyway we can,” said Mark Collins, senior vice president, Voice and Data Products, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Connecting with family and friends is most important at times like this— we want to make it as easy and worry free as possible for our customers.”

Still available, AT&T wireless customers can text “redcross” to 90999 to give a $10 donation to help the Red Cross with disaster support efforts in the area.  No text message fees apply.

And, TV Japan – the 24 hour Japanese news channel – is available for free through March 17 to all U-verse® TV subscribers, allowing viewers to follow the news and recovery efforts. TV Japan can be found on channel 3680.

Internet: (ALERT) AT&T to impose a cap on internet usage starting on May 2nd. (From DSL Reports)

computer  The following information comes this morning from DSL Reports (LINK) http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Exclusive-ATT-To-Impose-150GB-DSL-Cap-Overages-113149 (http://www NULL.dslreports NULL.com/shownews/Exclusive-ATT-To-Impose-150GB-DSL-Cap-Overages-113149).  If you are an AT&T DSL user, and you are a power user (Someone who downloads regularly, or uses services like Netflix) you may want to consider getting a new service provider.

*********************************************************************************************************************

(From DSL Reports)

Broadband Reports was the first to learn, and has confirmed with AT&T, that the company will be implementing a new 150GB monthly usage cap for all DSL customers and a new 250 GB cap on all U-Verse users starting on May 2. From March 18 to March 31, AT&T users are going to be receiving notices informing them of the change in the company’s terms of service. AT&T spokesman Seth Bloom confirmed the news to Broadband Reports after we initially contacted him last Friday concerning a leaked copy of the upcoming user notification. According to Bloom, the cap will involve overage charges. However, only users who consistently exceed the new caps will have to deal with these charges.

This is how it will work: only users who exceed the new usage cap three times — across the life of your account, not per month — will be forced to pay these new per byte overages. Overages will be $10 for every 50GB over the 150 GB or 250GB limit they travel.
AT&T claims their average DSL customer uses around 18GB a month, and these changes will only impact about 2% of all DSL customers — who the company states consume "a disproportionate amount of bandwidth."
"Using a notification structure similar to our new wireless data plans, we’ll proactively notify customers when they exceed 65%, 90% and 100% of the monthly usage allowance," AT&T tells us. The company also says they’ll provide users with a number of different usage tools, including a usage monitor that tracks historical usage over time, and a number of different usage tools aimed at identifying bandwidth-hungry services.
Regular readers will recall that this isn’t AT&T’s first experimentation with usage-based-billing. The company conducted trials of capped services and overages in Reno, Nevada and Beaumont, Texas in 2008 (http://www NULL.dslreports NULL.com/shownews/ATT-Metered-Billing-Trial-Hits-Second-Market-99389). Those trials involved users facing caps ranging from 20GB to 150GB — and per gigabyte overages up to $1 per gigabyte. The efforts were discontinued in early 2010 (http://www NULL.dslreports NULL.com/shownews/107012). In contrast to those trials, which involved capturing nearly all users in an overage net — this effort is aimed squarely at what AT&T considers consistently heavy users.
