DVD and USB (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/DVDandUSB NULL.jpg)

I have a PC with an older motherboard and I’m not able to set the BIOS to boot from a USB drive or USB stick, just from a CD or DVD. I may be able to do this if I update the BIOS but I don’t want to take any chances, so I was delighted to read a post last week by Trevor at How-To Geek (http://www NULL.howtogeek NULL.com/howto/16822/boot-from-a-usb-drive-even-if-your-bios-wont-let-you/) offering a solution on how to boot from a USB drive using PLoP. I’ve tried it out and it works perfectly.

I followed the instructions in that post, downloaded plpbt-5.0.10.zip, extracted it to a folder, found plpbtnoemul.iso in that folder and burned that to a CD using ImgBurn (http://www NULL.imgburn NULL.com/). I plugged in my USB stick with Ubuntu and then booted up from the CD I’d just made. I was presented with a menu where I could select USB and sure enough I booted into Ubuntu on the USB drive. An internet connection was available after I entered my WAP password.

Software: Skype error – Skype plug-in causes browser crash

skype  One of the things I have been seeing a lot of recently involve errors that say Skype add-on for Internet Explorer has stopped working properly.

image (*Windows 7 version of message used)

For those who are not familiar with Skype, it is (From the Skype Wiki LINK: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skype (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Skype))

“Skype (pronounced /ˈskaip/) is a software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet. Calls to other users of the service and, in some countries, to free-of-charge numbers, are free, while calls to other landlines and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Additional features include instant messaging, file transfer and video conferencing.”

During the install process (if you use the default settings to install), Skype installs what is referred to as the Skype web feature.  What this feature provides is a short cut from your browser to Skype, with all phone numbers shown during your browsing appearing like this  skype  , which allows you to click on the link and then your browser will automatically start Skype and make the phone call for you thru Skype.

In a posting on the Skype support site (LINK:http://share.skype.com/sites/devzone/2007/06/the_skype_addin_for_internet_e.html (http://share NULL.skype NULL.com/sites/devzone/2007/06/the_skype_addin_for_internet_e NULL.html)) they claim that the issue is resolved in newer versions of Skype

In fact, most likely we already have a fixed version for you to start using now! If you have a Skype version is lower than 4.1.0.141, there is an updated version available with many improvements. You can download the latest version here: www.skype.com (http://www NULL.skype NULL.com). You can check your Skype version number under the Help menu in the About dialog.

However, most of the pc’s that I have dealt with this are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 and are using the latest version of Skype.  The only solution that I have found works is in Windows go to control panel –> Programs and Features and uninstall the Skype web features.

Keep in mind that by uninstalling the web features you loose the Skype highlighted phone numbers in your browser.

Software: Skype extension for Firefox causing slow Firefox with some websites (Post from www.techandlife.com)

The following post comes from TechandLife.com (LINK: http://www.techandlife.com/2009/08/skype-extension-for-firefox-causing-slow-firefox-with-some-websites/ (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/2009/08/skype-extension-for-firefox-causing-slow-firefox-with-some-websites/)). TGM would like to say Thank you to TechandLife for allowing us to share this with TGM readers.

skype

I posted recently on trying the Google Chrome browser (http://www NULL.techandlife NULL.com/2009/08/google-chrome-a-worthy-alternative-browser/) after Google Reader and Google Mail suddenly slowed to a crawl in Firefox. It turned out that the latest Skype extension for Firefox was causing the problem. I had upgraded Skype to version 4.1.0.141 and elected to install the Skype extension for Firefox during the Skype upgrade. Others have also reported this problem recently (http://support NULL.mozilla NULL.com/tiki-view_forum_thread NULL.php?locale=it&forumId=1&comments_parentId=409074).

So if you’re experiencing problems with Firefox suddenly being a lot slower than usual, particularly when viewing Google Reader, Google Mail and Facebook and you’ve recently upgraded Skype and installed the Skype extension for Firefox, uninstall it and things should improve. Doubtless Skype will fix this buggy extension in a later release. Thanks to Scotian who posted in the comments of the Chrome post and resolved this problem.

Software: Organizing web sites, it’s all in the Icon. A Tweak for your web browser. (Works with Firefox and Chrome)

Like a lot of people I belong to a few Social Networking websites (Linkedin, Facebook, MySpace, etc..) and a lot of times when you want to check on one you want to check up on all of them. The issue I had was that I didn’t want to change my home pages. I say pages because I take advantage of the multiple tab feature of today’s browsers, and with the click of an icon I’m up to date on several blogs that I follow.

So I don’t want to change my favorites but I want to open up multiple pages, what to do? After a quick search on the internet I found that with Mozilla Firefox you can make a quick addition to the short cut to open up a different set of web pages.

Keep in mind these directions are only for Firefox, but will work similarly for Google Chrome. If you are using Internet Explorer 7 or 8 these instructions are not going to work for you.

The first step involves adding a short cut to your desktop. To do this;

1. Right mouse click on a blank portion of your desktop.

2. From the menu choose “New”. A Sub-menu will be generated.

3. Choose “Shortcut” from your list of options.

4. The following Dialog box should appear.

image

5. Click the Browse button and navigate to the following directory, c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox. From the list of files choose the Firefox.exe, and then click the Okay button.

image

6. Finish by choosing the “Next” button and then the “Finish” Button. This will add the Firefox icon to your desktop.

These steps also work for putting a short cut to Google Chrome on your desktop, but the path to the Chrome.exe is different.

7. Once the Shortcut has been created right mouse click on it and from the menu choose “Properties”. The Properties dialog box should appear. Select the Shortcut tab.

8. You will see the “Target:” field and in the field should be the path to the Firefox executable. Eg. “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\Firefox.exe”. At the end of the statement add any and all websites you want, just add a space between each address.

image

  1. I repeat the process grouping the websites with common functionality to a different Icon

clip_image006

As an example:

Let’s look at the Firefox Icon I’ve set up to follow some video games I’m interested in. I edit the Target: field to read as the following,

“C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” http://www.starcraft2.com http://www.commandandconquer.com http://www.bungie.net

In the properties this will appear as one long line without line breaks. As you can see though there are spaces in between each web site I want to open.

image

If I open my regular Firefox Icon I see the home page that I’ve set up.

image

If I double click the Icon I’ve set up for my favorite video games, you’ll see that my browser now only opens up those web sites I’ve told it to in the target path.

image

Keep in mind I am opening multiple web sites, it will take longer to open up because I’m asking the web browser to do more work.

I didn’t have a chance to test out doing this for any other browser, so if you use Netscape, or Safari or any other browser, drop us a line and let us know if you tried it and how it turned out.

Software Recommendation: Startup Delayer 2.5.138 (Free)

startdelayt There are times during the Windows start-up that issues or slowness can occur is multiple programs are trying to start at the same time.  r2 Studios (LINK: http://www.r2.com.au/software.php?page=2&show=startdelay (http://www NULL.r2 NULL.com NULL.au/software NULL.php?page=2&show=startdelay)) based in Brisbane, Australia has a nice little (and Free) utility allowing to control how long each program waits before startup.

From the r2 Studios site -

The power to speed up your computer’s startup process! If each program (Scheduled to run at startup) tries to load at the same time, you will notice the slow down that occurs during boot up, due to your CPU trying to help all the programs to load, and your hard disk accessing multiple files

Startup Delayer allows you to setup how many seconds after Windows has started, to load each program.
For Example:
If you have your mail program and a special clock starting up, then you can make your mail start say 10 seconds after Windows has loaded, and then the special clock start 20 seconds after Windows Starts.
Compatible with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista
