Tech Geek and More’s Preferred Android Apps (as of July 2011)
I’ve been enjoying my Sprint EVO phone since it’s release. Coming from years of using Windows Mobile, learning Android has been “interesting” to say the least. Since I converted to droid, I have found some apps that were nothing more than garbage, while at the same time finding many others that I now find myself not being able to live without.
I have just posted my current app list (these are the apps that are loaded on my phone). In the list I’ve labeled “TGM Favorite” the apps I consider best of the best (in my opinion)
My list can be found here (LINK) http://www.techgeekandmore.com/android-tech-geek-and-more-preferred-apps-list-updated-1111/
The list is as of July 1, 2011
Phone: HTC Evo 4G
95 total, 90 free (94%), 5 paid (5%),
**Please keep in mind that I use a rooted Phone. So a few of these app’s are limited to Rooted phone users. Those app’s that require rooted phone’s are labeled accordingly whenever possible.
Software: Plants vs. Zombies for Android– Free today on the Amazon Market
Game Maker PopCap Games, Inc. (LINK: http://www.popcap.com/ (http://www NULL.popcap NULL.com/)) is bringing the popular Plants vs. Zombies game to Android. The game which is available from the Amazon Marketplace is free today (5/31)(LINK) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0052UZIFA?tag=modaco06-20 (http://www NULL.amazon NULL.com/gp/product/B0052UZIFA?tag=modaco06-20)
The Amazon Marketplace is currently U.S. only marketplace, but like everything else on the internet, someone will always come up with a workaround. In this case, Paul O’Brien of Modaco has written up a very detailed and easy to follow guide on how to access the Amazon Marketplace from outside of the U.S. (LINK) http://android.modaco.com/content/software/336184/using-the-amazon-appstore-from-outside-the-us-including-paid-apps/ (http://android NULL.modaco NULL.com/content/software/336184/using-the-amazon-appstore-from-outside-the-us-including-paid-apps/)

Software: Twitter clients: Hootsuite vs. Seesmic
I’ll admit it… I’m a Twitter addict. I love the interaction and knowledge that is shared throughout the community, and I’ve met some really great people through it. However, Twitter can quickly suck up all my time, energy and patience – especially when I try to tie my tweets in with my Facebook and blog posts.
To try to make some sense of the whole social mess, I turned to Hootsuite (http://hootsuite NULL.com/), which seems to be the defacto post-once, post everywhere social media tool. Through it, I could post to my Facebook profile, Facebook business page, and my Twitter all at once. This was especially convenient when I posted from my phone – I love being able to take pictures at events I go to (like last Friday’s Bulls for Boobs (http://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/photo NULL.php?fbid=10150148427738309&set=a NULL.10150148427443309 NULL.282499 NULL.361182788308&type=1&theater) Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk (http://www NULL.the3day NULL.org/site/PageServer) fundraiser, thrown by the team I walk with in Arizona, Team W.I.S.H (http://teamwisharizona NULL.org/)). However, I became frustrated because Hootsuite wasn’t posting items the way I wanted it to, so I began my search for a “better” Twitter client.
Lo and behold, I think I may have found it! Seesmic (http://www NULL.seesmic NULL.com/) recently updated their web client with a whole bevy of new features (not the least of which is the ability to update your Facebook page, something that only Hootsuite did well and easily). Here’s a few of my personal pros and cons for each of the platforms:

Hootsuite Pros:
- Clearly the more polished web interface of the two. You can make it look really pretty and shiny.
- Has full analytics built-in. This is useful if you’re interested in that sorta stuff, which I should be but am really trying to avoid it in a defiant 3-year-old temper tantrum kind of way.
- The mobile clients are pretty slick and easy to use. They even look a lot like their web client, which is a boon for those of us with short attention spans.
Hootsuite Cons:
- I can only get 4 columns to show up at any time on the web interface. Normally, this should be enough information overload for anyone, but I’m a firm believer in the myth of multitasking.
- No desktop version. Now, granted, i don’t use a desktop client, but if I did, this would be a negative.
- The Android client only posts links to pictures that you upload to Facebook – there’s no preview. So instead of a bunch of really cool pictures of a bull wearing a pink bra (http://www NULL.facebook NULL.com/photo NULL.php?fbid=10150231209035786&set=a NULL.10150231208825786 NULL.360705 NULL.677500785&type=1&theater), I got a bunch of links on my Facebook status. Not the intent, there.

Seesmic Pros:
- Multiple columns on the screen – right now, I have six showing. This is wonderful for me, because I can monitor all of my different real estate and business client lists from one place – and still see the main conversations in my feed as well.
- Cool contact manager – find out anything you wanted to know about those you’re following, including if they’re following you back. Not that there aren’t tons of services out there that do this too, but I like that it’s all in one place.
- When you upload a picture to Facebook, it shows a preview of the picture. I explained this one up in the Hootsuite cons above. Pictures make me look at the rest of the post – they’re attention getters, and I like it if my posts get attention.
- Totally rocking Direct Message system. It’s on a separate page, and acts more like chat than a Twitter feed. It definitely prevents you from losing DMs in a wave of other tweets.
Seesmic Cons:
- No analytics. This is a big bummer, because even though I personally don’t use them, I absolutely understand the need and want to see if your social media efforts are paying off. There are a lot of people who are getting tons of business, real estate or otherwise, off their Twitter and Facebook usage. I’m sure they’re tracking their ROI.
- The Android client is slow, and sometimes bogs down if there’s been a lot of time between updates. I don’t turn on background notifications because I have an HTC Evo and the battery life is second to ..oh… EVERYTHING, so having to wait 10 minutes while the tweets of the day load kills me. I did find a workaround for this that involves clearing the cache, so I can live with it.
So there you have it – why I decided to switch from the Twitter client all the cool kids used to one that might not do everything, but what it does, it does really really well. I can tweet, post to pages, and generally annoy my Facebook friends all from one program, and be virtually guaranteed that things will look they way I want them to, barring the occasional Android autocorrect fail. Throw in the option of using their kick-ass desktop client on top of everything, and we’ve got a winner!
Note: Tweetdeck (http://www NULL.tweetdeck NULL.com/), another popular program, also has a rather robust web client, if you’re using the Chrome browser. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the damn thing to work for me (it seemed as clunky as my dad’s old 70′s-era Chevy Nova,) and their Android client doesn’t post to pages (or if it does, the ability is hidden REALLY well.) Anyway, that’s why I didn’t include it in this analysis.

Software: Internet Explorer 9 – Is now available
After a year of previews, beta’s, and release candidates, Microsoft has now released the latest version of Internet Explorer 9. Internet Explorer 9 includes the following (From Microsoft – LINK: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9 (http://windows NULL.microsoft NULL.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9) )
Notification Bar
The Notification Bar that appears at the bottom of Internet Explorer gives you important status information when you need it, but it won’t force you to click a series of messages to continue browsing.
Search in the address bar
You can now search directly from the address bar. If you enter a website’s address, you’ll go directly to the website. If you enter a search term or incomplete address, you will launch a search using the currently selected search engine. Click the address bar to select your search engine from the listed icons or to add new ones.
New Tab page
The redesigned New Tab page displays the sites you visit most often and color codes them for quick navigation. A site indicator bar also shows how often you visit each site, and you can remove or hide the displayed sites anytime you like.
Enhanced tabs
Tabbed browsing allows you to move easily between multiple open webpages in a single window, but there might be times when you want to look at two tabbed pages at the same time. Tear-off tabs allow you to drag a tab out of Internet Explorer to open the tab’s webpage in a new window, and Snap it for side-by-side viewing.
Download Manager
Download Manager is a powerful new feature that keeps a running list of the files you download from the Internet and notifies you when a file could be malicious. It also lets you pause and restart a download—if you have a slow internet connection—and shows you where to find downloaded files on your computer. You can clear the list at any time
Pinned Sites
If you visit certain webpages regularly, Pinned Sites allows you access them directly from the taskbar on your Windows 7 desktop.
Streamlined design
The first thing you’ll notice when you open Internet Explorer 9 is the compact user interface. Most command bar functions, like Print or Zoom, can now be accessed by clicking the Tools button, and your favorites appear when you click the Favorites button. Otherwise, Internet Explorer gives you the basic controls you need, and lets the web take center stage.
Download links for Internet Explorer 9 leaked a few hours early, as spotted by Winrumors.com (http://www NULL.winrumors NULL.com/internet-explorer-9-rtm-download-links-now-live/):

Hardware: How to resolve SD Card issues (In Windows)
I ran into an issue this week when I attempted to format an 8 GB High Capacity SD Card inside of a camera and it failed to format. I then put the SD card in a pc and attempted the format from the pc only to receive and error and be unable to format the SD card.
The pc would report that the SD card was not formatted and needed to be. When I attempted to format on the pc, I would get an error that said “Failed to format the device”
In doing some research on this issue I discovered that there is an SD Association (Link: http://www.sdcard.org (http://www NULL.sdcard NULL.org)) and they have a free Program specially designed to format SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. The program called SD Formatter has the following advantage (From the SD Association Page)
This software formats all SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and SDXC memory cards that comply with the SD File System Specification. SD Formatter provides quick and easy access to your SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.
The SD Formatter was created specifically for SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards. It is strongly recommended to use the SD Formatter instead of formatting utilities provided with operating systems which format various types of storage media. These generic utilities may result in less than optimal performance for SD/SDHC/SDXC Cards.
So I downloaded the program called SD Formatter 3 and tried it on ,my SD card. Here are the steps for using SD Formatter -
- The application initializes with just one small screen.
- First, select the drive containing the card you wish to format. Likely, this will be E or F for most Windows users. Notice that when you select the drive, the size of the SD disk appears just below the selection. For the 4GB card used in this example, the size is recognized as 3.68 GB. (No Matter what size SD card you use, the size will report just a little bit smaller due to formatting requirements).
- Next, click Option to select how you want the SD card formatted. A dialogue box appears with a dropdown menu listing three “format type” options.
- The first, Quick, is simply a standard wipe of the disk—all data currently on the disk will be erased.
- The second, Full (Erase), will put the disk into a proper SD format, be aware that even though this lists as Erase because it does a simple delete vs. overwrite, it may still be possible (Its not easy but could be done) to recover the files that were on the drive.
- The third option, Full (OverWrite),—is the option you will want to use most often, as it formats the card properly, while giving it a fresh start with no old data left on the disk at all. Not all cards support this, but if you choose this and the card does not support the option, the formatter automatically reverts to the second “erase off” option during the formatting process. (NOTE: With this option, when its gone, its gone!)
- Under the Format Type dropdown menu is a second menu called “format size adjustment” that asks if you want to try to increase the amount of space on your SD card or not. Turning this option on will allow you to use the maximum space possible on your SD card. Once you have made your selection, click OK.
![]()
- You will be brought back to the original formatter screen where it should display the options you just selected:
- Click Format. If you select Quick you will be informed that “Data may be retrieved after quick format. Meaning that it will not completely overwrite what is on the card. (However, you will need special recovery software to retrieve files from the card as all the pointers that would show you the files when you look at the drive will be removed, so the card will appear blank) Click OK
- Finally after that you will be asked one last time if you are sure you want to do this. If you are sure, click OK.
- A new dialogue box then displays the status of your formatting efforts. For the options selected above, it first erases all files from the disk, then formats it. If you are using a larger disk, as in this example, this process will take a few minutes. Do not turn off your computer or remove the disk until the entire process is complete.
When complete, a dialogue box appears telling you the results of the formatting process.
With that you should now have a very usable SD card.

I posted before on how to download YouTube videos using FLV2AVI. Unfortunately this software is no longer supported and can no longer download videos.
After doing some research it seems that there is another free software which will allow you to download videos in MP4 format.

Software: Panda Cloud Antivirus – Review
Last week I was given an opportunity to try Panda’s Cloud Anti-virus solution. I’ve always been under the belief that I need to directly use a product before I tell others what I think, I’m not comfortable just going by awards or others word of mouth alone. So for the past week I have been running Panda’s cloud solution on a couple of computers and here is what I have found so far.
- It works simply
- Its footprint is small
–> I’ve installed the Paid version of the software on a Windows 7 Enterprise (32 bit, w/500 gig HD, 2 gigs of memory) Lenovo laptop that is my work horse machine. My laptop is running about 18 hours a day 7 days a week. I have seen no slow downs during boot up, during usage, or shut down. I’ve been able to run a full scan of the Panda software and still continue to multi-task (Connected to customers via GoToMeeting or PCAnywhere, while doing documentation, transferring large files, access email, streaming music/TV, web surfing, etc.). Previously when I had other Anti-Virus products installed on the same machine (Symantec being one of them), the laptop would struggle while the scan was going on.
–> I installed the free version on a Ultra Mobile PC (Samsung) running Windows XP Tablet Edition (32bit, 40 gig HD, 1 Gig of Memory). The UMPC has struggled with most anti-virus software, however, Panda has been running with no sign of issues. The UMPC is used for handheld software testing for a couple of the customers I serve. Previously The UMPC had been running Microsoft Security Essential and MSC would lock up the UMPC every time I tried to do a full hard drive scan, Panda has not had that issue.
- I have various tools that I use to check and see if the Anti-Virus is working. Everything I tried to throw at it, was found and cleaned up.**
**The only issue I discovered is that the software had difficulty cleaning up a pc that was already infected prior to Panda being installed.
The Panda Cloud Software comes in both a free (for personal use and non-profit organizations only) and paid version ($29.95 for 1 year / $65.95 for 3 year’s of coverage), the differences are as follows
So far in my usage of the Panda software, I can feel comfortable saying that I can recommend giving Panda Cloud Software a try.
