Software: Fix for Microsoft Money not installing

microsoft  I ran into an interesting error yesterday while trying to reinstall (LINK)Microsoft Money (http://www NULL.microsoft NULL.com/download/en/details NULL.aspx?displaylang=en&id=20738) on my pc. When launching the installer, I would get a message that said “The AUTORUN.INF file is missing or corrupt” when trying to reinstall.

(by the way, YES I know that in this post I’m talking about a product that Microsoft no longer offers or supports)

image

The AUTORUN.INF file (which is part of the installer) is supposed to tell the pc what to do when a CD is installed.  After doing a little research, I found the hang up causing this error. It is actually a simple fix, HOWEVER IT WILL REQUIRE YOU TO GO INTO THE COMPUTER REGISTERY. GOING INTO THE REGISTRY AND CHANGING THINGS WHEN YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING WILL BREAK YOUR COMPUTER.  FOLLOW THESE STEPS EXACTLY AND DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES TO YOUR REGISTERY UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING. (THAT’S MY WARNING, NOW BACK TO THE POST)

Steps to fix install issue –

– Go to start – click on run in Windows XP or search box in Windows 7 and type REGEDIT (doesn’t have to be in caps) –> Then hit enter or click ok

image

Windows XP

image
Windows 7

This will open up your register window. (ONE MORE TIME, FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE IN THE REGISTERY UNLESS YOU ARE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING)

– In the registry – click on the arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> followed by clicking the arrow next to software

image

- Now Click on the arrow next to Microsoft

image

- Now click on the arrow next to WindowsNT –> Followed immediately after by clicking the arrow next to CurrentVersion.

image

- Lastly, look for InFileMapping and click on the arrow next to it. Under InFileMapping, you will find Autorun.inf. This is the cause of the error.

image

- You want to right click directly on Autorun.inf and select Rename.

image

- Once you rename it you should see the registry look like this

image

- At this point, reboot your pc. As soon as it restarts (before you start surfing the web or checking email), Install Microsoft Money. You will find that it will install without any issues.

- Lastly after you install Microsoft Money, Reboot 1 more time, so that Windows can recreate the key you renamed.

Software: Update your Non-Tech friends pc day…. 11/25/11

computer Microsoft via their (LINK) Windows Team Blog for Internet Explorer (http://windowsteamblog NULL.com/ie/b/ie/archive/2011/11/23/get-ready-for-update-your-parents-browser-day NULL.aspx) is calling this coming Friday 11/25 “Update your Parents Browser” day. However, in the opinion of Tech Geek and More that idea is narrow minded.  Every Tech, Geek or just knowledgeable computer person has a few people (because no one has just 1) that call regularly whenever something goes wrong on a pc.  You know the call, “I wasn’t doing anything and then all of a sudden………” .  So Tech Geek and More is actually asking its readers to expand on the idea, and use Friday while your visiting non-tech friends and family, and update all software on the pc. Just remember, the more updated they are, the better chance you have of them NOT calling you to fix it.

Just an idea of what should be updated

- Adobe Acrobat

- Adobe Flash

- Adobe Air

- Adobe Shockwave

- Oracle Java

- Anti-virus (If they don’t have a current one install a free one)

- All Windows Updates

- All Office Updates

- All installed browsers (Not just IE)

- **Plus review for any other installed programs that you know should be updated.

If you don’t want to take to long doing this, you can visit (LINK) Ninite (http://ninite NULL.com/), where you can install the latest version for a majority of the software.

If you need ideas as to when, the (LINK) Windows Team Blog (http://windowsteamblog NULL.com/ie/b/ie/archive/2011/11/23/get-ready-for-update-your-parents-browser-day NULL.aspx) lists Top-10 Moments to Update…. (Windows Team Blog story by Scott Armstrong (http://windowsteamblog NULL.com/members/sarm34/default NULL.aspx)

Top-10 Moments To Update Your Parents’ Browser

10. When they’re manning the fire extinguisher dealing with the yearly deep-fried turkey accident.

9. When they’re telling your cousins “when I was your age” stories.

8. When they’re face down in the eggnog punch.

7. When they’re fighting over the right way to carve a turkey.

6. When your mom kicks you out of the kitchen for peeling potatoes “the wrong way.”

5. When they’re sent to the grocery store at 2PM on Thanksgiving Day for extra cranberries.

4. When they’re sitting at the Adult’s table (rally the other kids to help).

3. When they’re standing in a Black Friday line.

2. When they’re untangling Christmas lights.

And the number one time to update your parents’ browser is…

1. When they’re distracted by grilling you about when you’re going to get a real job, when you’re going to settle down, and when you’re going to give them grandchildren.

So watch for these moments and many more to help them make the upgrade to a modern web browser today. Web developers everywhere will thank you!

Happy Thanksgiving from the IE team!

Tech: Removing the In place Ad’s in Internet Explorer – Also known as Vibrant Ad’s

computer%20science *This was originally posted in 2010, but recently I’ve seen this question come up a lot more than usual, so a repost for those with this Vibrant Ad issue.

One of the questions I keep getting asked involves “pop up ads” that appear as highlighted words on Webpages.  What you will see when browsing on various sites is that key words will be highlights and double underlined (As shown on example below), and when you place your mouse over the key word a “related” ad to the key word will appear.

image

There are a couple of problems with this, 1st off the ad pops up as long as you move your mouse, so you DONT get a choice on if you want to see it or not and 2nd, allot of those “related” ads may be related to the key word itself, but may have nothing to do with the topics you are searching for.  As in this post from a tech site, about a story the new i-Phone leak and when my mouse goes over the story, I get an ad for BP…..

image

So what do you do if you want to get rid of these ads.  Here are the steps…..

1 – On the top of Internet Explorer – Go to Tools –> Internet Options\

image

2- Once in Internet Options, click on the “Security Tab” –> The on Restricted Sites –> The on the button that says Sites

image

3 – Once there in the box that says “Add this website to the zone enter the following 3 websites.

  • *.vibrantmedia.com
  • *.intellitxt.com
  • *.kontera.com

image

4 – You will need to refresh the webpage at this point by clicking on page refresh on the top of Internet Explorer.

image

************************************************************************************************

*NOTE – Example ads are bigger in post than normal for example purposes.

**NOTE – Sites that offer Inline ads do this as a revenue stream so that they can offer viewers services for cheap or free, while making money from the ads.

***NOTE – Tech Geek and More does NOT use any form of Inline ads and if anyone comes across any form of inline ads within the TGM site, we ask to be notified immediately.  Please send a screen shot if possible with details of what you see and from which posting.  (SOAPBOX) Even though TGM is looking for ways to help with the cost of running the TGM site, it is felt that inline ads ruin the browsing experience and as such does not want those type of ads for its visitors. (END SOAPBOX)

Software: Happy 10th Birthday Windows XP

windows_xp_logo   Happy Birthday Windows XP. Windows XP was released to retailers on October 25, 2001. Codenamed whistler, Windows XP development started in 1999 when the operating system was known as Windows Neptune.

Kids_10th_Birthday_Cake

(From the Microsoft XP (LINK) Wiki (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Windows_XP))

Windows XP is an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops and media centers. First released to computer manufacturers on August 24, 2001, it is the second most popular version of Windows, based on installed user base. The name “XP” is short for “eXPerience.”

Windows XP, the successor to Windows 2000 and Windows Me, was the first consumer-oriented operating system produced by Microsoft to be built on the Windows NT kernel. Windows XP was released for retail sale on October 25, 2001, and over 400 million copies were in use in January 2006.

Software: What to do Before / During / After a Malware infection.

computer virus This Malware thing is becoming such a common issue that its driving me up the wall (In My opinion).  I’ve been ask by many customers if its just tech’s creating these malware infections for job security.  Let me tell you that I can promise you no tech worth his knowledge wants this kind of job security.  (End of my Soapbox)

So what do you do with your computer to give you a fighting chance?  Here is what you should do

Now that your pc is not infected

1 – Verify that you have “Fairly recent”* version of antivirus software installed, and that the AV software at is installed is running the latest Definitions possible.

a – *What do I mean by fairly recent, if you find your antivirus software and it says anything less than 2009 in the name (as in Norton 2005, McAfee 2003, etc.) then its to old.  Antivirus software that old will just not have the information needed to keep up with the ever changing landscape

b – If its older than 2009, then I recommend just uninstalling it, and downloading a free Antivirus offering.  (See the next answer for recommendation)

c – What if you find that you don’t even have antivirus installed or that the one you have is old.  I recommend visiting www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com).  There you will find a selection of Free Up to Date antivirus offerings.  There are a couple of offerings, I would recommend MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), but you would not do bad with any of the ones listed.  Its at least better than the situation you were in.  All you need to do is put a check next to one you select, then at the bottom select “Get Installer”, and hit run when prompted.  It should download and install it for you.

image

**Remember to uninstall any old antivirus before installing its replacement, as pc’s don’t like to have 2 AV software running at the same time.

2 – Now that we have the AV situation address, you now need to add 2 pieces of free software to your install.  It is hoped that you never need to use them but it makes life much easier if you install them now, before you get infected.  (Think about it like car insurance, you don’t want to try and get the insurance after crash, same thing applies here for the software).

a – Go back to www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) and select Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Click on the “Get Installer” button at the bottom and then click run when prompted.  That should install both.

image

image

b – Once installed you want to open each of the 2 programs you just installed at least once to make sure they installed correctly, and also to update the programs to the latest definition files. You should also run a full scan with each of the 2 programs on all hard drives.  To make sure that nothing is hiding in your system.

c – If either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware finds anything during its scans it will tell you at the end and very simply help you clean up your pc.  (Just select the infected files found and select remove infected)

3 -   Lastly, go back to www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) , and select the following files

image

image

  • QuickTime
  • Flash
  • Flash (IE)
  • Java
  • .NET
  • Silverlight
  • Air
  • Adobe Reader

These are all programs that most average users have installed, and vulnerabilities in old versions of these programs are some of the most common ways that many of the bad guys use to infect pc’s. Once you have all of these selected, click on “Get Installer” and then click on run when prompted.

image

You may notice that I list www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com) a lot in the options above.  Just to make it clear, Tech Geek and More has no direct or indirect participation with ninite.  Ninite is just a TGM recommended site, because they make updates simple, opposed to having to visit multiple sites to get the the updates accomplished. In addition, TGM appreciates the fact that when you install these programs via Ninite, they do not install Toolbars, or other junk that drives all Techs crazy (as we have to constantly uninstall Junk).

What to do once you do get infected

Unfortunately, even with taking every precaution imaginable its still possible to get infected. At the point of being infect here is what you need to do

1 – DON’T PANIC! (Seriously, if you panic you will not remember to follow the following steps and will probably make things worse)

2 – Immediately shut down the pc.

a – Try to do it by clicking on Start – Shutdown – Shutdown on the screen and if that doesn’t work, then just hold the power button on the pc until the pc powers off.

3 – Once the pc is off, power it back on and as soon as pc starts to boot press F8 over and over, until you get to the safe mode screen choices, use the up/down arrow to select safe mode with networking and hit enter

image

**Keep in mind that in safe mode your pc will look a little “odd”, that is normal.**

4 – Once you get into your pc, Go to start –> settings –> control panel –> and click on internet options –> then go to connections tab –> and click on LAN settings (toward bottom) and make sure nothing in that window is checked, if it is uncheck it, then click ok

image

5 – At this point if you have not installed SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes, go to Step#2 under “Now that your pc is not infected” (above) and follow those steps to install both programs.

6 – Once installed, start by running SuperAntispyware, and when prompted select yes to update definition files. Once definitions are updated, run a Full Scan on all your Hard Drives (That would be any drive that doesn’t hold a CD or DVD).

image

image

The scan will probably take 1 hour on most average sized drives (Average = 320 gig drives). Once scan is completed, select all files that show infected and then click on remove select.  That covers part of the process.  Now to the next part.

DO NOT REBOOT IF PROMPTED

7 – Now start Malwarebytes, and when prompted say yes to updating the definition file.

image

8 – Once updated, select Perform full scan and hit select

image

You will then be asked to select your drives, select all drives that don’t use CD or DVD and press Scan

image

The scan will probably take 1 hour on most average sized drives (Average = 320 gig drives). Once scan is completed, select all files that show infected and then click on remove select.  That covers part of the process.  Now to the next part.

IF PROMPTED AGAIN –> DO NOT REBOOT
9 – Now in Windows –> Go to start –> run –> and type msconfig
a – This opens the msconfig window.  Under the start up tab –> Uncheck all items listed.  (DO NOT touch any of the other tabs) and click ok.

image

IF PROMPTED TO REBOOT –> AGAIN SAY NO

There is 1 more step.
10 – Open up My computer and go to –> c:\ drive –> windows folder –> system32 folder –> drivers folder –> etc. folder and in that location find a file called hosts and double click it, when prompted select to open with notepad.

image

Once the file opens look for the following line “#    127.0.0.1       localhost”

image

As shown in the example anything below the 1st 127.0.0.1 needs to be deleted.  Then save your changes by clicking on File –> Save.

Once you have done all this reboot.

After the clean up in safe mode

After the clean up in safe mode, and the reboot, there are still a couple of things you need to do.

1 – You will need to reinstall your Antivirus product.  If you were infected, there is a chance that your AV product is compromised, if nothing else, it just makes sure its complete or gives you a choice to pick a new AV package. This is especially important if your AV software is a few years old.  Make sure to uninstall then reinstall.

2 – Using the Step#3 in the “Now that your pc is not infected” section. Make sure you update the programs listed in that section.

With that you should be back up and running.

Software: Internet Explorer 9 – Is now available

microsoft After a year of previews, beta’s, and release candidates, Microsoft has now released the latest version of Internet Explorer 9. Internet Explorer 9 includes the following (From Microsoft – LINK: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9 (http://windows NULL.microsoft NULL.com/en-US/internet-explorer/help/ie-9/whats-new-in-internet-explorer-9) )

Notification Bar

The Notification Bar that appears at the bottom of Internet Explorer gives you important status information when you need it, but it won’t force you to click a series of messages to continue browsing.

Search in the address bar

You can now search directly from the address bar. If you enter a website’s address, you’ll go directly to the website. If you enter a search term or incomplete address, you will launch a search using the currently selected search engine. Click the address bar to select your search engine from the listed icons or to add new ones.

New Tab page

The redesigned New Tab page displays the sites you visit most often and color codes them for quick navigation. A site indicator bar also shows how often you visit each site, and you can remove or hide the displayed sites anytime you like.

Enhanced tabs

Tabbed browsing allows you to move easily between multiple open webpages in a single window, but there might be times when you want to look at two tabbed pages at the same time. Tear-off tabs allow you to drag a tab out of Internet Explorer to open the tab’s webpage in a new window, and Snap it for side-by-side viewing.

Download Manager

Download Manager is a powerful new feature that keeps a running list of the files you download from the Internet and notifies you when a file could be malicious. It also lets you pause and restart a download—if you have a slow internet connection—and shows you where to find downloaded files on your computer. You can clear the list at any time

Pinned Sites

If you visit certain webpages regularly, Pinned Sites allows you access them directly from the taskbar on your Windows 7 desktop.

Streamlined design

The first thing you’ll notice when you open Internet Explorer 9 is the compact user interface. Most command bar functions, like Print or Zoom, can now be accessed by clicking the Tools button, and your favorites appear when you click the Favorites button. Otherwise, Internet Explorer gives you the basic controls you need, and lets the web take center stage.

Download links for Internet Explorer 9 leaked a few hours early, as spotted by Winrumors.com (http://www NULL.winrumors NULL.com/internet-explorer-9-rtm-download-links-now-live/):

Software: Windows – Optimize your computer for peak performance

microsoft People think a pc is like a TV, just there, you click on the power button and it turns on, and that all you need to do. In fact that is wrong, a computer needs to be treated more like a car than a TV. You should be doing the pc equivalent of an oil change and tune up, so that you can get the most out of your pc.

The following tips can help improve your computer’s performance. These examples are for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. However, you’ll find that these tips work for all versions of the Windows operating system.

By the way, it is not possible for you to blow up your computer or your files with any of these procedures. These tasks use utilities provided within the Windows operating system to help you to achieve the best system performance. This article does not address tinkering with the registry files

Microsoft at home has a great article with tips on what you should be doing. “Optimize your computer for peak performance”. Software: How-to fix: When Internet Explorer gives you “Page cannot be displayed” error

microsoft  An issue I’ve been dealing with recently involves Internet Explorer unexpectedly coming up with the message “This page cannot be displayed”, when surfing but only on some websites.  Sometimes it is the entire page with that message, sometimes its only part of the page.

image

(I have found 2 solutions that have helped clear up this issue.  I suggest trying solution #1 and seeing if that corrects things and then moving to solution #2 if the issue continues.) The issue seems to occur because something inside of Internet Explorer gets “corrupted”.  To clear up the corruption you can do the following

Solution #1 – Clear Cookies and Temporary Internet files.

To clear cookies and Temporary Internet –

  • Close all open copies of Internet Explorer
  • Go to Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Internet Options

  image

  • When Internet Options opens –> Click on Delete (Middle of the page)

image

  • When the Delete Browsing History opens –> Make sure that Preserve Favorites website data is unchecked and that Temporary Internet files and cookies have a check next to them.

image

  • At this point click on Delete (at the bottom).  Once the system finishes removing your temp files and cookies, you can close the Internet options windows by clicking ok.
  • Now open Internet Explorer and try one of the sites that wasn’t working again.

Solution #2 – Reset Internet Explorer to “Factory Defaults”

Sometimes the issue with Internet Explorer can be caused by a toolbar, or add-on that is just not working properly. If Solution #1 didn’t fix your issue, try the following steps.  (Again this is done with Internet Explorer closed.)

  • Go to start –> settings –> Control Panel – Internet Options
  • In the Internet Options Window –> Go to the Advanced Tab
  • Then Click on the Reset button (towards the bottom of the box)

image

  • The following Window will open –> click on Reset**. (See Below if you want to know what changes with this reset)

(Prior to this reset make note what your homepage address is, as that will be changed back to msn.com)

image

  • Once reset completed, close the Internet Options window by clicking ok, and then try one of the sites that wasn’t working correctly.

This is what happens when you do the reset.

Reset Internet Explorer settings

By resetting Internet Explorer settings, you return Internet Explorer to the state it was in when it was first installed on your computer. This is useful for troubleshooting problems that might be caused by settings that were changed after installation. When you delete personal settings, some webpages that rely on previously stored cookies, form data, passwords, or previously installed browser add-ons might not work correctly. Resetting Internet Explorer to its default settings does not delete your favorites, feeds, Web Slices, and a few other personalized settings. See the table below for a complete list of all settings and information about whether they are reset or maintained.

Resetting Internet Explorer’s settings is not reversible. After a reset, all previous settings are lost and cannot be recovered. Rather than resetting everything, you might want to reset specific settings or delete your webpage history. For more information, see the links at the bottom of this topic.

Internet Explorer settings that are affected by a reset

The following table describes what will happen to various settings when you reset Internet Explorer.
