Kindle Fire 7″ Tablet Deal (via HSN)

**UPDATE: This item is now sold out at HSN

Tech Geek and More doesn’t usually look at Home Shopping Network or HSN.com for deals, but Today’s Special (http://www NULL.hsn NULL.com/electronics/kindle-fire-7-dual-core-8gb-wi-fi-tablet-with-accessories_m-10062515_xp NULL.aspx) is the exception. For today (12/2/12) only, Home Shopping Network has the Kindle Fire 7” Dual Core , 8 GB Wi-Fi tablet on sale.  I know some of you are wondering where the deal is, since the $199.95 is the same price you see at the store. However, the one thing that HSN offers that most stores don’t offer is Flex Pay. With Flex Pay you can get the tablet by Christmas and pay $39.99 / month for the next 5 months.

Review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (via Phandroid)

With the Galaxy Note 2 Samsung improves on the “phablet”. For those who don’t know exactly what is considered a phablet

Definition of: phablet (PHone tABLET) A smartphone with a screen approximately 5″ diagonal, larger than traditional smartphones and smaller than tablets, which have 7″ and 10″ screens. Tablets are not phones and not pocket size.

The following video (from Phandroid), is a review of the new Galaxy Note 2.

Possible solution If you just upgraded to a Sprint EVO 4G LTE and suddenly cant receive calls (Via pocketables.com)

sprint  Sprint has finally released their new flagship EVO 4G LTE phone. Since the release I have received a few messages from EVO users who have run into an issue where they can make calls with no problem, but for unknown reasons they cant receive any calls, with all calls going straight to voicemail. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get my own original EVO 4G upgraded to the new LTE phone (it will be happening shortly) so I was limited with assistance, until I came across the following.

Pocketables (http://www NULL.pocketables NULL.com) (formally known and Good and Evo) posted steps taken by their staff after the writer of their post PSA: Check Google Voice if you upgraded your Sprint phone and can’t receive calls (http://www NULL.pocketables NULL.com/2012/06/psa-check-google-voice-if-you-upgraded-your-sprint-phone-and-cant-receive-calls NULL.html) and one other person on their staff ran into the same issue. The following steps come from Pocketables

If you’re experiencing the same thing, and you have Google Voice integration enabled on your Sprint account, the issue is actually pretty easy to fix.

  1. Sign out of Google Voice on your phone – either clear your app data in Settings > Apps > All > Google Voice > Clear data, or simply uninstall the app temporarily.
  2. Sign into Google Voice on your computer, go to your settings, click the Disable link next to your phone number, and click Disable Sprint account.
  3. Place a test call to your mobile number. If your phone now rings, you’ve confirmed that the problem was indeed Google Voice, and not anything phone- or network-related.
  4. Wait around 15 minutes, and then return to your Google Voice settings on your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to re-enable your Sprint account.
  5. Set up Google Voice on your phone again.

I would like to say thank you to John Freml and Pocketables for the solution. I’ve used it successfully on everyone who has reported this issue.  Seems that Sprint tech support isn’t much help with this issue as their only solution so far seems to be replacing the phone (At least that’s what the people who asked me for help on the issue said they were told to do by Sprint).

Tablet Deal – Lenovo IdeaPad A1 Tablet for $189 (Save $210 off the normal price)

Lenovo  Just came across a great deal for anyone looking for a (non-fruit) tablet. It seems that Lenovo has a great deal directly from the (LINK) Shop Lenovo (http://shop NULL.lenovo NULL.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog NULL.workflow:category NULL.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=1D93DC696842DCD16814BD79634CB472&menu-id=products) website. If you purchase the A1 tablet and use eCoupon  FOURDAYDEAL315 during the checkout process, all you will pay is $189 for the tablet ($199 for white and pink, $249 if you want it in blue).

Everyone is currently focused on the “New iPad”, but for most people the IdeaPad will do everything they need (and in some cases more), for 1/3 the price.

The IdeaPad A1 Table has the following specs –

Texas Instruments OMAP 3622 ( 1GHz )

You will notice that this 7” tablet runs Android 2.3, for most people that is all that you will need. The majority of current Android apps are designed for Gingerbread (2.3).  If you are looking to be cutting edge, and you need to have the latest and greatest, then this tablet probably isn’t for you. If you want a good quality tablet, that will give you Flash functionality without spending an arm and a leg, then this is a deal you want to look into.

A couple of notes, (1) I’m not sure how long this deal will last, as I don’t see an end date on the Lenovo page. So don’t think about it too long if you are interested. (2) Remember that you need to use eCoupon FOURDAYDEAL315, or you will not see the discount rate.

How to read ePub books on a Kindle Fire

Kindle fire  A friend of mine got a Kindle fire for Christmas (as I’m sure millions of others did to). One of the things she discovered is that the Kindle Fire does NOT recognize or open eBooks that are in the .ePub format.  Personally I think its strange that Amazon would not include ePub format in the kindle reader as ePub books seem to be one of the most common eBook formats (at least based on what I see when surfing the web).  My friend was disappointed as she already had a large collection of ePub formatted books that she was hoping to load on her Kindle Fire.

So that’s where todays post starts, “How to do get the Kindle Fire to recognize an ePub book”?  Lets start with the following, “What eBook formats can you read on the Fire”? The answer is ……….(Insert Drum Roll here)………List from Amazons (LINK) Kindle Fire Page (http://www NULL.amazon NULL.com/Kindle-Fire-Amazon-Tablet/dp/B0051VVOB2)

Content Formats Supported
Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, non-DRM AAC, MP3, MIDI, OGG, WAV, MP4, VP8.

Of the formats listed – Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively, DOC, DOCX, are the eBook formats. So what do you do if you want your ePub file on the Kindle. You need to get conversion software for eBooks that will allow you to convert your ePub file.

The one that we found is called (LINK) Calibre (http://calibre-ebook NULL.com/). (From the Calibre site)

E-book conversion

calibre can convert from a huge number of formats to a huge number of formats. It supports all the major e-book formats. The full list of formats can be found here (http://manual NULL.calibre-ebook NULL.com/faq NULL.html#what-formats-does-app-support-conversion-to-from)

The conversion engine has lots of powerful features. It can rescale all font sizes, ensuring the output e-book is readable no matter what font sizes the input document uses. It can automatically detect/create book structure, like chapters and Table of Contents. It can insert the book metadata into a “Book Jacket” at the start of the book.

The best part about the Calibre software is that its FREE! You can download the Calibre software on their (LINK) download page (http://calibre-ebook NULL.com/download) . Calibre is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and also in a portable version, which means you can put the files on a USB drive and run the program on any pc without actually installing the program.
