Just came across the latest Sprint update for one of our Samsung Galaxy S3 phones. The update which appeared this morning brings the S3 from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2. The 4.1.2 update which was 1st scene in the international version of the S3 in December is supposed to bring better battery life plus a few new features to the Samsung S3 from the Galaxy Note 2.
The Upgrade
- When you click on the update, it will prompt you to click on Install which will reboot your device.
- Once your device reboots, you will see the Green Android on your screen for about 3 minutes (or so), while the system updates. After the update the system will reboot again.
NOTE: In our case after the 2nd reboot, our phone got stuck on the Samsung boot screen which required us to pull the battery to get the phone to restart. We didn’t see any issues once we pulled the battery.
- Once the phone finishes booting you will find that it is now upgraded to 4.1.2 with a kernel dated 2/14/2013.
What’s New With 4.1.2
So far the only thing we can find different on the phone that has been upgraded is the addition of the Samsung Group Play program. This is the same program shown on the Samsung TV commercial where you see multiple people looking at the same unicorn picture.
Using Group Play on S3
Group Play
Group Play allows many people to view content at the same time and interact with the content. You can mark the content using the touch screen on your device. Everyone sees the markup as you make it. You can share documents and photos or listen to music using Group Play.
You can save the edits made on each screen by taking a screen capture. Press and hold the S Pen button while pressing and holding anywhere on the screen.
Starting a Group Play Session
Step 1: Connect all the devices to the same Wi-Fi® network.
Step 2: Touch Apps
> Group Play
.
The first time you open the application, you will be presented with a short tutorial. Follow the on-screen prompts to continue. You will see a Notification window with a message about using Group Play on an unsecured Wi-Fi access point. Review this information, mark the Do not show again box, if you desire, and then touch OK.

Step 3: Select a Picture, Document, or Music file to share by touching one of the options. You can select multiple items by touching each file.

Step 4: To begin sharing, your device will prompt you to create a PIN. Anyone wanting to join the Group Play will need to enter this PIN. Enter your desired PIN and touch Done.

Step 5: The Group Play session will start automatically.
NOTE: Alternatively, you can navigate to the file you would like to share; touch and hold the file name, and touch Share via. From the list, touch Group Play to begin a sharing session.
