I have received numerous calls in the past few days concerning “gtb22.tmp.exe” from friends, family and clients all seeing/believing that they were infected with a virus. It seems that you may see the error as a windows error that says “gtb22.temp.exe” is not responding. Unfortunately if you do a search on that file you will find very little information. Here is what I have been able to discover so far:
- This is not a virus.
- This is related to the Google Tool Bar
- The file in question can be found at C:\DOCUME~1\Hulk\LOCALS~1\Temp\Google Toolbar\gtb22.tmp.exe
Due to the limited information on this so far (even by Google itself) its hard to say exactly what the file is for. (Warning Soap box time) I laugh when I get calls because someone’s internet access is not working properly or they are having a hard time getting online or doing anything online and I get there to discover multiple toolbars (MSN, Google, Ask, Weather Channel, etc…)

How do people get toolbars? A majority of people have a HORRIBLE habit of blindly clicking on “Yes” and “OK” whenever we’re installing something on their computer. Due to that fact they don’t read the prompts during installation about the inclusion of toolbars. I know its not the funniest thing but instead of Twittering or updating MySpace/Facebook while installing something, maybe if people just bothered to see what is being installed during the process they could stop the “I don’t know where that came from” issues later. Additionally most browsers now have built in features or add-on’s (called extensions) that directly add virtually all the features from Toolbars directly into the web browser allowing for you to benefit from the features without the need of the Toolbar. HAHA!! I love the toolbar that has NO purpose. It is only a blank line, then also the dual-redundant AskJeeves search toolbars. Idiots…
